Financial Controller

We are seeking a highly skilled Financial Controller to oversee the accounting functions of a dynamic development firm.

About the Company

Our client, a specialized development firm, focuses on mid-to-high rise residential projects in the Greater Toronto Area.

Role Overview:

The Financial Controller will manage all corporate accounting activities, reporting directly to the VP of Finance and Accounting. This role is crucial for ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with accounting standards, and enhancing financial operations.

The Controller will handle daily accounting tasks, including payroll, taxation, accounts receivable/payable, generating regular financial statements and reports, maintaining reliable accounting records, and ensuring adherence to generally accepted accounting principles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop the corporate accounting team, promoting a culture of excellence.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, mentor, and enhance the skills of the accounting team.
  • Manage the general ledger and accounting software to ensure accurate financial records.
  • Guarantee the accuracy of financial data and oversee proper bookkeeping practices.
  • Oversee payroll processing, including deductions, reconciliations, and compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Coordinate timely completion of tax filings and government reporting.
  • Prepare year-end working papers and financial statements.
  • Oversee treasury functions and monitor cash positions across entities.
  • Ensure accurate chargeback processes and intercompany reconciliations.
  • Produce timely and accurate management reports for all entities.
  • Continuously assess accounting operations, propose enhancements, and implement processes to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Design and maintain accounting and internal control systems and procedures.
  • Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Provide monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial analyses.
  • Prepare and manage budgets, forecasts, and track against actuals.
  • Generate and maintain financial reports.
  • Provide financial analysis as required.

Competencies:

  • University degree in Accounting, CPA or CGA accreditation.
  • Over 10 years of accounting experience, preferably within the real estate sector.
  • More than 5 years of experience managing accounting teams.
  • At least 3 years of experience in payroll management and tax compliance.
  • Experience in preparing and filing taxes, and liaising with tax authorities and external accounting firms.
  • Proficiency in Excel and accounting software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
  • Results-driven with strategic influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Attention to detail with exceptional reporting abilities.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.

Compensation:

CA$105,000/yr - CA$140,000/yr
