Position Overview

The primary objective of this role is to deliver technical and educational assistance to the Stagecraft & Event Technology Program, as well as to users of the Performing Arts Facilities. This position emphasizes exceptional service to all stakeholders consistently.

Key Responsibilities
1. Instructional Support for the Stagecraft Program:
a. Guide students regarding props, lighting, sound, set construction, stage management, and house management;
b. Collaborate with faculty to oversee and evaluate practical examinations; assist in the creation and modification of assessments;
c. Supervise and support students during the construction, setup, and dismantling of productions;
d. Demonstrate and assist students in the proper use of machinery, tools, and software for assignments;
e. Ensure a sufficient inventory of materials required for courses and productions;
f. Attend production meetings and, when necessary, help clarify guest designers' and directors' requests for students;
g. Enforce safety protocols for students within the Stagecraft facilities and instruct them on safety measures;
h. Provide oversight for Stagecraft and Theatre students during production runs;
i. Offer informal guidance to students regarding technical components of class projects in a lab environment;
j. In collaboration with faculty, prepare equipment and materials for labs, ensuring proper storage post-use.

2. Technical Support for the Stagecraft Program:
a. Maintain various equipment, including lighting, sound, rigging, and shop tools;
b. Set up and operate all theatre equipment for both internal and external events;
c. Supervise students operating equipment during Stagecraft productions;
d. Conduct minor maintenance and repairs in the Theatre Stage area;
e. Clean and maintain stage, booth, and workshop areas, coordinating service for Stagecraft and facility equipment;
f. Advise users on technical specifications for events and productions when requested;
g. Participate in production meetings;
h. Enforce safety protocols for all users within the Performing Arts Facilities;
i. Manage supply inventories, including tracking orders.

3. Additional Duties:
a. Communicate with college and community users to coordinate technical aspects of bookings and productions;
b. Handle revenue deposits from ticket sales;
c. Compile ticket sales data and generate reports;
d. Notify facilities personnel of minor cleaning and maintenance requirements; inform the Coordinator of significant maintenance needs;
e. Maintain an up-to-date inventory of theatre properties and equipment, including rentals and loans;
f. Liaise with professional companies for external exchanges and loans;
g. Record and submit receipts for petty cash purposes.

Qualifications for Success
  • Proficient in English, both written and verbal.
  • Completed a degree in Technical Theatre from a recognized post-secondary institution or equivalent, with three years of relevant experience in various technical theatre areas, or a comparable combination of training and experience. Experience in theatre rigging, lighting, sound, scenic carpentry, video systems, and A/V streaming systems is essential.
  • Strong understanding of safety protocols in workshop and performance environments.
  • Experience supervising students in a post-secondary context is advantageous.
  • Physical capability to perform manual tasks related to set construction and maintenance; ability to safely lift weights between 20-40 kg.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision while establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and collaborate effectively.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the safe and proper use of equipment in performing arts and workshop settings.
  • Ability to monitor resource conditions in a technical theatre context and follow administrative procedures for maintenance and upgrades.
  • Professional interaction with diverse stakeholder groups, providing support to faculty and students as needed.
  • Familiarity with ETC Lighting consoles, both analogue and digital sound consoles, VectorWorks CAD, QLab, and Isadora software, as well as rigging safety and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze shop drawings to estimate supply costs and source materials.
  • Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience in budget management and tracking.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
