Lead and Manage Firefighting Operations

As a District Chief, you will take on a leadership role within Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency, overseeing all firefighting operations, activities, and programs for your assigned division. This includes coordinating emergency response efforts, managing EMS services, and ensuring the safety of our community during fire incidents.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Command and Control: You will act as the on-scene Incident Commander, directing and coordinating all aspects of emergency response. This involves making critical decisions, delegating tasks, and ensuring effective communication among team members.
  • Training and Development: Collaborate with the Training Division to develop and implement training programs for both career and volunteer firefighters, ensuring they possess the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively.
  • Operational Excellence: Enforce operational guidelines, safety standards, and regulations to maintain a safe and efficient fire service. This includes overseeing equipment maintenance, station upkeep, and adherence to established protocols.
  • Performance Management: Monitor the performance of assigned staff, including career firefighters, station officers, and volunteer captains. Conduct performance appraisals, provide feedback, and address any performance concerns.
  • Investigative Support: Assist in fire investigations to determine the origin and cause of incidents. Refer suspicious fires to relevant authorities and ensure thorough documentation of findings.

Your Qualifications:

To excel in this role, you will need:

  • Minimum five (5) years of operational experience at the rank of Captain or a supervisory role within a career or composite fire service.
  • A Diploma or certificate from a recognized institution in fire administration, fire science, fire engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience managing fire ground operations using Blue Card Command Training or an equivalent Fire Incident Command system.
  • ICS 300 certification is preferred.
  • NFPA 1521 Department Safety Officer or equivalent training is considered an asset.
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Professional Qualifications are considered an asset.
  • NFPA 472 Response to Hazardous Materials Incidents/ WMD is considered an asset.
  • NFPA 1033 Qualification as a Fire Investigator is considered an asset.
  • A valid Class 5 Nova Scotia driver's license.
