About the Department: The Communications and Government Relations team plays a crucial role in shaping and disseminating the impact of our humanitarian initiatives and advocacy efforts. We cultivate strong relationships with government officials and policymakers to promote meaningful change. Through innovative media relations and public engagement strategies, we strive to amplify community narratives that showcase our humanitarian work globally.

Job Purpose:
The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and communicator, highly organized, deadline-oriented, and possesses a proactive attitude with a keen interest in journalism and government relations. The successful applicant will lead our media engagement initiatives, which encompass drafting press releases, collaborating with traditional media outlets, composing op-eds, preparing briefing notes for interviews, and fostering relationships with key journalists, among other responsibilities. Additionally, this role will provide occasional support to our broader Communications and Government Relations team through advocacy campaigns, government relations activities, and various writing and administrative tasks.

Prior experience in journalism, press, or media engagement ranging from 6 months to a year is advantageous. The position offers flexibility for partial remote work; however, some in-person attendance at the office and local/regional events will be necessary.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Participate in weekly team meetings with the Communications & Government Relations department.
  • Attend local fundraising events, government meetings, and emergency response activities.
  • Engage with traditional press and media outlets (TV, radio, newspapers, and online platforms).
  • Draft and distribute press releases and statements.
  • Compose and edit opinion editorials (op-eds) for the IRC blog and external publications.
  • Coordinate with Islamic Relief Canada's regional and national fundraising teams to gather timely information for media coverage of events.
  • Monitor mentions of Islamic Relief Canada in traditional and social media.
  • Update and maintain existing media and external relations databases.
  • Build and nurture relationships with media outlets, editors, and government officials.
  • Assist the Communications & Government Relations team in organizing external-facing events.
  • Prepare briefings and speaking notes as required.
  • Provide copy editing support to the Communications & Government Relations team.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing team to ensure the website is current with the latest press releases, reports, statements, and media articles.
  • Complete various administrative tasks, such as creating spreadsheets and submitting receipts, as needed.

Qualifications & Competencies:

  • 1-2 years of relevant work experience.
  • A background in journalism, media, communications, or a related field is required.
  • Highly organized, innovative, action-oriented, and able to meet deadlines.
  • A motivated self-starter capable of taking both guidance and initiative.
  • Detail-oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Non-adversarial interview skills and the ability to elicit information effectively.
  • A team player who collaborates well within a team environment.
  • Proficient in Google Suite and MS Office.
  • Willingness to learn how to conduct media interviews on camera.
  • Commitment to the mission, values, and goals of Islamic Relief.
  • Eligibility to work in Canada.
  • A current local driving license and access to a vehicle.
  • Flexibility to attend occasional evening and weekend events.
