Port Captain

The Port Captain is a key role within Seaspan Marine, responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of our marine fleet. This position reports to the Manager, Vessel Operations and works closely with various departments to maintain high standards of safety and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:- Oversee and organize the safe and efficient operation of the assigned fleet, including daily problem-solving, troubleshooting, and complaint handling.
- Provide leadership by motivating employees, conducting performance evaluations, and delivering ongoing training.
- Build strong team morale and facilitate communication between the corporate office and seagoing personnel.
- Develop and implement safety procedures and protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
- Assist with vessel compliance, including regulatory and statutory inspections, and planning for preparedness.
- Provide operational expertise to other departments, including emergency preparedness and incident command.
- Organize and supervise specialty barge and large project loading and unloading, ensuring all operational health and safety measures are in place.
- Conduct incident investigations and implement corrective measures to prevent future incidents.
- Promote and ensure workplace safety through ongoing monitoring of company policies and procedures.
- Minimum Watchkeeping Mate Certificate.
- Completion of Technical, Engineering, or Nautical Sciences Program at a recognized secondary school institution (an asset).
- Minimum 5 years of shipboard or marine operations management experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Navigational knowledge of the Washington and British Columbia coasts.
- Knowledge of relevant Canadian and International Marine Regulations.
- Knowledge of the Canada Labour Code and Occupational Safety and Health Regulations.
- Knowledge of the marine industry on the West Coast of North America and understanding of West Coast Port and Terminal Operations.
- Understanding of the operations of a tug and barge fleet.
- Communication and supervisory skills.
- Self-starter with the ability to work both alone and in a team environment.
- Problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to handle emergency response effectively and efficiently.
