Railway Welding Supervisor

Reporting to the Track Supervisor, the Welding Supervisor is responsible for executing daily operations while achieving or surpassing corporate and project objectives for safety, quality, profitability, and timelines, ultimately ensuring exceptional customer satisfaction. The Welding Supervisor oversees the welding and repair of railway track assets in a demanding construction environment while utilizing stick and wire-feed welding techniques, along with grinding processes.

Key Responsibilities:
- Promote and uphold a strong safety culture while complying with industry standards and company protocols.
- Act as the on-site leader for the crew tasked with completing assigned projects.
- Review job specifications, prepare necessary equipment and materials, and execute repairs promptly.
- Conduct railway-related track repairs on various assets, including specialized track components, using specific welding and grinding methods as outlined in the railroad welding manual.
- Repair and replace defective parts as necessary.
- Utilize air arcs, burning rods, and cutting torches to shape materials according to fabrication requirements.
- Inspect workpieces for defects and measure them to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and emergency repairs as needed.
- Identify equipment malfunctions or defective materials and report to supervisors.
- Operate machinery in accordance with safety regulations and guidelines.
- Maintain CROR qualifications and secure track protection as required for daily operations.
- Conduct daily site reviews and collaborate with supervisors or contractor representatives to assess ongoing work and potential hazards, effectively communicating through task-specific briefings.
- Take responsibility for crew performance concerning company objectives, safety audits, and adherence to policies. Initiate follow-up actions, including training and mentoring as necessary.
- Lead daily task-specific briefings with the crew to discuss track protection, production targets, performance feedback, safety protocols, and to gather input from team members as per company policies.
- Safely operate company vehicles and ensure daily maintenance and inspections are performed.
- Demonstrate a commitment to safety by modeling, educating, and enforcing safe work practices and company policies.
- Manage time-sensitive tasks effectively to meet daily production goals while adhering to industry standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities:
- Train, mentor, and inspire team members.
- Inspect equipment, diagnose issues, and inform supervisors of necessary repairs.
- Maintain records and prepare reports on maintenance activities, including daily work orders and time entries.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of welding experience in a heavy industrial setting is preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of welding materials and properties of various metals.
- Proficiency in MIG and stick welding techniques.
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to interpret assembly drawings and detailed welding blueprints.
- Capability to analyze problems and recommend effective repair solutions.
- Understanding of safety policies, rules, and regulations.
- Familiarity with various types of special track work to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Experience with conformal frog repairs is advantageous.
- Valid Ontario class G driver's license is required; additional Class DZ is a plus.
- Exceptional welding and grinding skills, with the ability to identify and correct welder faults through training.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Work is performed outdoors along the railway right-of-way.
- Frequent work in flat welding positions within a live rail environment.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, climb, balance, lift, bend, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Exposure to various weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
- Work involves exposure to loud noises.
- Potential exposure to live tracks/trains and high voltage.
- Ability to work rotating shifts.
- Flexibility to support railway needs in emergency situations as required.
