Calgary, Alberta, Canada TC Energy Full time

Driven. Innovative. Inquisitive. If these traits resonate with you, we are eager to learn more about your background. At TC Energy, we are dedicated to solving energy challenges — committed to advancing North America towards sustainable energy solutions while addressing the energy needs of today and the future.

Position Overview

The Facilities Reliability & Integrity Engineering Services (FRIES) division is composed of a team of specialists who create standards and strategies to enhance TC Energy's facility assets throughout North America. This team also delivers advanced engineering support to tackle intricate challenges and assist operational and project teams.

The Industrial Controls & Cybersecurity (IC&C) group within FRIES consists of experts focused on the systems and equipment essential to gas facilities, excluding the primary mover equipment. The IC&C group has four main responsibilities: establishing engineering standards, offering Tier 3 (escalated) support to operations, developing asset management strategies, and aiding project engineering.

We are looking for an Industrial Controls and Cybersecurity Engineer with expertise and experience in gas facility industrial control systems. The key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and managing a SQL Server-based cybersecurity data system, encompassing data manipulation, scripting, reporting, and analytics.
  • Overseeing the digital asset inventory and monitoring firmware/patching levels for ICS equipment across North America.
  • Providing specialized knowledge and support for field ICS assets.

This role necessitates a blend of technical skills in areas such as SQL, Python, and PowerBI, alongside operational expertise in industrial control systems, cybersecurity, and the gas pipeline sector. The ideal candidate will work closely with field teams to identify and resolve issues, promote standardization, and support training and qualification initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Data and Asset Management:

  • Develop and sustain a SQL Server database, Python-scripted data entry, and PowerBI reporting system for cybersecurity and asset data.
  • Maintain the digital asset inventory for all TC Energy Industrial Control System (ICS) assets across North America.

ICS Installation, Maintenance, and Support:

  • Install, maintain, and support virtualized systems.
  • Track and document firmware and patching levels for all ICS hardware and software, including: PLCs (Allen Bradley, Siemens, GE), managed switches (Cisco IOS-based), other Ethernet-based hardware (protocol converters, VFDs, soft starters, etc.), measurement assets (RTUs, flow meters, chromatographs, etc.), VMware-based server systems, Windows Server-based virtual machines, thin clients, and HMI software.

Cybersecurity Management:

  • Ensure adherence to cybersecurity policies and standards for TC Energy's ICS.
  • Collaborate with corporate groups to guarantee compliance with all TSA mandates for US-based ICS.
  • Modify ICS practices as needed to align with applicable cybersecurity regulations.
  • Monitor vulnerabilities, assess risks, and assist in formulating remediation strategies.
  • Implement and conduct firmware and patching upgrades for all ICS hardware and software.
  • Educate ICS personnel on practices necessary to fulfill cybersecurity requirements.

Engineering and Operations Support:

  • Conduct engineering or engineering-related studies that apply company, governmental, and industry codes, standards, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Provide engineering and construction/project management support to field teams.
  • Serve as a resource for field teams to identify and resolve issues, analyze malfunctions, make modifications or repairs, and provide assistance.
  • Maintain Asset Management Plans, Integrity Plans, and Facility Management Plans.
  • Offer technical guidance, instruction, and assistance related to the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and modifications of HMI, communications, control, monitoring, and analyzing equipment.
  • Contribute technical input in the design/construction/modification of electrical and control systems at compressor facilities.
  • Analyze automation schedules and construction plans to assess their impact on existing company facilities and operations.
  • Investigate, analyze, and recommend improvements related to the integrity and/or efficiency of equipment.

Knowledge Sharing and Standardization:

  • Maintain and enhance expertise in line with current and emerging technologies.
  • Facilitate information sharing by communicating best practices, improvement opportunities, new technologies, and general information.
  • Promote and ensure standardization among field operations, including equipment, maintenance functions, programs, and procedures.
  • Support the Field Technician Qualification and Operator Qualification programs.
  • Provide mentoring and verification services for field teams.
  • Offer technical guidance and participate in planning, providing, and reviewing EI&C-related technical training.

Compliance and Administration:

  • Monitor data acquisition systems and related computer equipment, coordinating any necessary software modifications.
  • Audit facilities to ensure compliance with company standards, policies and procedures, and governmental and industry codes.
  • Ensure the archival of automation program software and current backups.
  • Coordinate EI&C roundtables and service representatives' visits/support.
  • Perform other tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Four-year engineering degree or graduation from a 2-3 year technical school. Applicants without an engineering degree but with significant relevant experience may be considered for the Technologist job ladder.
  • 1-4 years of related experience.
  • For Canadian candidates, registration as a P.Eng in the prevailing jurisdiction in good standing (e.g., APEGA in Alberta).
  • Experience in data management, scripting, data entry, and presentation systems.
  • Operating knowledge of: Active Directory, Windows, VMWare authentication mechanisms, electrical, controls, and automation systems, various PLC and HMI platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in installing, configuring, maintaining, repairing, and supporting computer hardware and software.
  • Proficiency in designing, installing, maintaining, and operating SQL Server installations.
  • Familiarity with Python or comparable scripting.
  • Knowledge of PowerBI and/or other reporting/dashboarding systems.
  • Experience in building and maintaining data entry interfaces for database installations.
  • Skills in assessing and mitigating potential security threats.
  • Knowledge of the gas pipeline industry.
  • Understanding of data communication.
  • Experience with Allen Bradley equipment.

This position requires candidates to:

  • Hold and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening, including drug and alcohol testing.
  • Be available for extended work hours/days, and callouts as needed.
  • Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings, or training, which may involve some overnight stays away from home.

Driving a motor vehicle is an essential job function of this position. Following a conditional offer of employment, the Company will check the motor vehicle records of any job applicant when driving is an essential job function.

To remain competitive and support our high-performance culture, we offer a hybrid work model and flexible dress code for our eligible office-based workforce.
