Overview:

Mdewgaan Lodge (mi-day-gaan / medicine lodge) is dedicated to supporting Indigenous women with young children facing challenges related to addiction and mental health, particularly those impacted by complex trauma and socioeconomic hardships.

This initiative aims to prevent the involvement of children in child welfare systems, addressing historical injustices and the disproportionate representation of Indigenous children in such systems.

Our approach is holistic and trauma-informed, integrating Traditional Healing, Cultural Programming, and mainstream clinical practices.


Key Responsibilities:


Under the guidance of the Supervisor, Mdewgaan Lodge, the Counsellor will:

  • Process service requests with compassion, ensuring a culturally-informed and professional approach aligned with established standards.
  • Deliver respectful and culturally relevant support to Indigenous families, in line with the mission and values of Native Child and Family Services of Toronto.
  • Maintain a safe environment by upholding house rules and expectations.
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and educational support to residents, focusing on life and social skills development.
  • Assist residents in setting personal goals and offer continuous support in achieving them.
  • Facilitate appropriate referrals for counselling, group sessions, and educational classes.
  • Ensure the maintenance and protection of equipment and supplies.
  • Manage petty cash and transportation token distribution.
  • Offer individual support through crisis intervention and conflict resolution.
  • Conduct life skills activities and events centered on addiction prevention and intervention.
  • Provide cultural and traditional support through community circles.
  • Prepare written and verbal assessments regarding residents' readiness for participation in programs.
  • Address the cultural needs of residents effectively.
  • Collaborate with the Mdewgaan Lodge Team to provide information, referrals, and follow-up services.
  • Assist in meal planning with residents.
  • Represent Native Child and Family Services of Toronto within the community.
  • Perform additional duties related to the program's mandate as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong understanding of Indigenous healing practices, including land-based and cultural knowledge.
  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Connection to First Nations, Metis, or Inuit communities is an asset.
  • Equivalent experience in social services with Indigenous populations may be considered.
  • Minimum of two years of direct experience in social work, preferably in a transitional or group home setting.
  • A valid (G) Driver's License is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Current CPR and First-Aid certification or willingness to obtain prior to employment.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous cultures, particularly within urban settings.
  • Knowledge of resources available for Indigenous individuals facing homelessness, addiction, and mental health issues.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the services provided by NCFST.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational abilities, especially under pressure.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team committed to integrating Indigenous traditions and values.
  • Proficient computer skills for required software applications.
  • Compliance with NCFST's COVID-19 vaccination policy, absent a valid medical exemption.
