Overview of the Role: Funded by Alberta Health Services, this suicide prevention initiative aims to recruit and train youth aged 15 – 25 as Wellness Ambassadors. These ambassadors will provide care and compassion to their peers who express concerns regarding mental health. This position is collaboratively delivered in partnership with C5, a coalition of five Edmonton agencies: Terra Centre for Teen Parents, Norwood Child and Family Resource Centre, Edmonton Centre for Newcomers, Boyle Street Community Services, and Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society. Alberta Health Services is also a key partner in this initiative.
Key Responsibilities:
The Project Coordinator will oversee the planning and execution of the Youth Connect Project. This comprehensive initiative is designed to empower youth and community agency staff to actively promote mental health and well-being within their communities. The Project Coordinator will develop a project plan aimed at marginalized youth, enhancing their competencies, language, and knowledge to offer compassion to peers facing mental health challenges. Acting as a trusted facilitator and advisor, the Coordinator will engage with a cohort of approximately 20 – 30 youth, Wellness Ambassadors recruited from within the C5 agencies. Responsibilities also include facilitating monthly network meetings with the Wellness Ambassadors and maintaining regular contact throughout the month. Additional duties encompass collaboration with community stakeholders, researching best practices, coordinating training sessions, data collection, and supporting project evaluation.
Job Conditions:
This is a full-time position (35 hours/week) with flexible hours from Monday to Friday, including occasional Saturday work. Evening work may be required, typically from 5 – 8 PM.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Post-secondary education in a field related to adolescent/youth development, with an understanding of the psychological, social, and emotional aspects of youth development.
- Strong comprehension of mental health issues affecting youth, including depression, anxiety, and trauma.
- Experience working with youth aged 15-25 from marginalized communities, with a minimum of 3 years preferred.
- Proven experience in community development initiatives; networking, collaborating, and building supportive relationships.
- Ability to create structured and adaptable program plans with defined goals, objectives, and outcomes for activities.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Ability to engage with youth from diverse cultural backgrounds and foster positive, effective, professional rapport and supportive relationships.
- Facilitate group discussions and manage diverse youth dynamics.
- Knowledge of referral services and supports within the Edmonton community, or the ability to research and connect with community resources.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Other Requirements:
- A valid driver's license and a reliable vehicle with 2 million liability insurance.
- Current clear Driver's Abstract.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- Current Standard First Aid (Level C Intermediate).
- Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
- Clear Police Information Check with vulnerable sector and Child Intervention Check dated within 90 days of start date.
