Position Overview
As an Electrical Safety Codes Officer (SCO), you will carry out responsibilities under the Safety Codes Act and relevant regulations. Reporting to the Electrical Inspections leadership team, you will be guided by Senior Safety Codes Officers. Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Assisting clients in resolving issues related to the design and construction of buildings or systems impacted by electrical infrastructure.
- Conducting thorough reviews of inspection processes to ensure compliance with approved electrical plans, codes, standards, and regulations.
- Evaluating permit values associated with electrical installations and ensuring adherence to relevant bylaws.
- Serving as a technical assistance center member, addressing inquiries related to electrical codes from the public and industry professionals.
- Enforcing compliance with legislation for individuals and companies operating without the necessary permits.
- Identifying and rectifying unsafe conditions within specified timelines, including follow-up inspections and investigations.
- Processing and approving requests for electrical code variances.
- Conducting remote video inspections as required.
Qualifications
To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:
- A Journeyperson Electrician certificate or equivalent recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training, along with a minimum of 6 years of electrical field experience; OR
- An Electrical Engineering Technologist diploma with at least 8 years of relevant experience; OR
- A degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of 8 years of related experience.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or pending charges, OR a valid Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits.
- Previous experience in electrical construction, particularly with on-site wiring for residential, multi-family, commercial, and industrial projects.
- Experience as a Group A Safety Codes Officer (SCO) - Electrical and/or holding an Electrical Master's certificate is advantageous.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Demonstrated sound judgment and effective decision-making abilities.
- A keen attention to detail while managing a dynamic workload with shifting priorities.
