About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Financial Accountant to join our team at the City of Calgary. As a key member of our finance department, you will provide financial expertise and support to our business units, helping them achieve their financial goals and objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with business unit representatives to collect, analyze, and review financial information, providing explanations and insights to inform budgeting and financial decision-making.
  • Support the development and application of financial and economic tools, such as business scenario modeling and business evaluations, to drive informed decision-making.
  • Work closely with the Finance Coordinators, Finance Lead, and business unit to prepare operating and capital budgets, budget status reports, and monthly management reports.
  • Review and analyze internal financial controls, risk management, and business processes to ensure compliance and efficiency.
  • Perform variance analysis and zero-base budget analysis to identify areas for improvement and optimize financial performance.
  • Support business performance reporting through the analysis of recreation facilities' financials and provide subject matter expertise to project groups as required.
Qualifications
  • At least 13 accounting courses recognized by CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant).
  • At least 5 years of experience in a complex and highly computerized accounting environment.
  • Technical accounting skills, including analyzing budgets and year-end financial statements and working papers.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word) is required.
  • Working knowledge of PeopleSoft Financial and Supply Chain Management (FSCM), Human Capital Management (HCM) and Hyperion (Budget Planning and Reporting); Oracle SmartView for MS Office will be considered an asset.
  • Previous experience must include working knowledge of grant programs and accounting for not-for-profit organizations.
  • Creative thinker demonstrating analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong communication skills with customers and operations, and experience handling sensitive information.
