About This RoleThe Mental Health and Addiction Program (MHAP) at Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a dedicated part-time physician (0.5 FTE) to join a collaborative clinical team. This role involves providing evidence-based withdrawal management and comprehensive mental health and addiction care in an outpatient setting.
The successful candidate will offer telephone consultative support to primary care providers, including physicians and nurse practitioners, as well as community pharmacists and inpatient care teams, assisting them in identifying and managing substance use disorders.
Work ScheduleWork hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with potential opportunities for virtual care to be discussed further.
Key Responsibilities- Evaluate and manage substance use disorders.
- Collaborate with the clinical team to establish and oversee withdrawal management protocols.
- Assess and address other medical and psychiatric conditions as necessary.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement interventions for suicide, self-harm, or harm to others.
- Develop and execute care and discharge plans in partnership with clients, the clinical team, and their families.
- Facilitate transitions of care across various settings.
- Deliver trauma-informed and culturally sensitive care.
- Provide brief interventions related to substance use and concurrent disorders.
- Maintain accurate and timely health records in compliance with Nova Scotia Health documentation policies.
- Possession of a current medical license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
- Certification in addiction medicine from recognized professional organizations, such as:
- College of Family Physicians Canada (CFPC) Certificate of Added Competence (CAC) for Addiction Medicine.
- American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) certification.
- International Society of Addiction Medicine (iSAM) certification is an asset.
- Willingness to obtain active credentials and privileges with NSHA.
- Maintenance of liability insurance through the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
- Experience in addiction medicine is preferred but not mandatory.
- Experience in a medical withdrawal management service is advantageous; however, training and mentorship opportunities are available for candidates with limited experience.
