Southbridge Care Homes is actively looking for a dedicated and full-time Infection Control and Prevention Specialist to enhance our long-term care facility.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Infection Control and Prevention Specialist will be an expert in resident safety, responsible for the strategic planning, development, execution, coordination, and assessment of comprehensive infection prevention initiatives. This role will embody the principles of the Infection Control and Prevention program, aligning with the overarching vision and mission of Southbridge Care Homes. The successful candidate will facilitate transformative changes through the interpretation and application of established standards, offering best practice recommendations aimed at enhancing resident health outcomes and mitigating disease outbreaks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and implement infection prevention and control protocols within the facility.
  • Engage in the development of an infection surveillance strategy and lead outbreak management in collaboration with local health authorities.
  • Conduct daily infection monitoring and compile monthly surveillance reports.
  • Provide education to staff on infection prevention principles and serve as a resource for related inquiries.
  • Ensure all residents are up-to-date with vaccinations and that the facility adheres to infection control regulations as mandated by relevant legislation.
  • Collaborate with the Leadership Committee to design, develop, and deliver training programs for both current and new staff, ensuring compliance with healthcare standards.
  • Regularly assess training initiatives to ensure they meet the needs of the facility.
  • Identify and report safety risks, conduct routine safety inspections, and promote safe working practices.
  • Offer expert advice on facility design, maintenance, and construction projects.
  • Lead the implementation of changes required by regulatory and accrediting bodies, including the reporting of communicable diseases.
  • Monitor adherence to infection prevention guidelines concerning the disposal of sharps and biomedical waste, use of personal protective equipment, and hand hygiene practices, providing feedback to the Infection Prevention Committees.
  • Analyze infection trends and risk factors, evaluating prevention and control measures.
  • Conduct program evaluations and propose recommendations for enhancements.
  • Spearhead the annual influenza vaccination initiative.
  • Direct outbreak response efforts in partnership with local health authorities.
  • Conduct research and interpret evidence-based literature to develop best practices, guidelines, tools, and resources for infection control.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
  • RN/RPN degree or diploma.
  • Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related field such as Microbiology, Epidemiology, Public Health, Health Science, Medicine, or Occupational Health.
Required Credentials
  • Certification in infection control (CIC or a-IPC) is preferred.
  • Willingness to enroll in a certification program within six months of hire, with a commitment to achieve certification within one year.
  • A minimum of 1 to 2 years of experience in infection control is essential.
  • Previous experience in long-term care and familiarity with relevant legislation is advantageous.
Required Education
  • Completion of IPAC Canada endorsed infection prevention and control courses is required.
  • Participation in the Basic Infection Prevention and Control Program offered by Centennial College, Toronto (online) is also necessary.
