Position Overview
The Manager, Communications and Media Relations is an integral member of the Corporate Communications team, reporting directly to the Vice President of Communications and Volunteer Services. This role is pivotal in leading the expertise center for the Calgary Stampede's external communications, enabling the organization to fulfill its strategic objectives and vision.
The incumbent will collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to cultivate relationships, crafting and executing external communications that promote consistent, on-brand messaging across various media platforms. As designated, this role will act as the spokesperson regarding publicity, media relations, and issues management in both proactive and reactive scenarios.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and implement comprehensive communication plans and programs that span the organization, including positioning and key messaging, along with animal welfare communication strategies.
- Create and execute strategic, integrated media initiatives that align across the organization, ensuring engagement strategies positively impact public perception of the Stampede.
- Enhance awareness and support for outreach priorities.
- Provide guidance and support to the Executive Management Team and the President & Chair of the Board regarding publicity, media-related matters, and issues management, collaborating with subject matter experts to develop key messaging.
- Serve as the primary spokesperson for issues management, both proactively and reactively, as designated.
- Identify and monitor risks associated with public issues, ensuring effective focus on issues management and crisis preparedness.
- Conduct media training for the organization's leadership.
- Evaluate and measure the effectiveness of the Stampede's external communications, designing strategies, tools, and processes aligned with the organization's strategic direction.
- Manage budgets, including tracking and analyzing opportunities to reduce costs and enhance profitability, and producing reports.
- Provide coaching, leadership, and guidance to the communications team, fostering a collaborative environment and ensuring team members are aligned with both strategic goals and operational results.
- Ensure the availability of appropriate communications expertise for publicity, media, and issues management through both internal and external resources.
- Act as staff liaison, participating in committee executive meetings and playing an active role in leading decisions, planning, and budgeting.
Qualifications
- A post-secondary degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in a similar role, including at least 5 years in issues management.
- Stay updated on industry trends and media best practices.
- Proficient in writing and speaking for diverse audiences.
- An exceptional writer capable of translating technical information into engaging narratives.
- A tactical understanding of primary social media platforms.
- Proactive with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- Ability to manage and execute last-minute media conferences.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- A solid reputation within the industry among both media and stakeholders.
- Capability to anticipate and manage change, recommending solutions using clear processes and methodologies.
- Experience working independently and in a collaborative team environment.
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships.
- Executive presence and professional demeanor are essential.
- Availability to work irregular hours to support volunteer meetings and events is required.
