Job Summary:

Industrial Light & Magic, a pioneer in visual effects, is seeking a talented Senior Staff R&D Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our Research and Development group, you will be responsible for developing innovative algorithms, crafting artist-friendly user interfaces, and optimizing data management processes.

ILM has been at the forefront of visual effects for over 45 years, with a legacy of creating some of the most iconic moments in motion picture history. Our R&D group is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in visual entertainment, and we are looking for a skilled engineer to help us achieve our goals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop innovative algorithms and tools for visual effects production
  • Craft artist-friendly user interfaces for our software applications
  • Optimize data management processes to improve efficiency and productivity
  • Collaborate with engineers across all ILM studios to develop and deploy new technologies
  • Work with commercial software vendors to develop and deploy machine-learning-based tools
Requirements:
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python on Linux
  • Knowledge of principles of visual effects, potentially with a specialty such as modeling, animation, lighting, rendering, image processing, etc.
  • Experience with Maya, Houdini, Katana, Mari or other commercial software applications
  • Experience with machine learning techniques, processes, and toolsets
  • Working knowledge of standard data formats: OpenEXR, OpenVDB, Alembic, USD, etc.
  • Enthusiasm for designing artist-friendly interfaces using GUI toolkits: Qt, PySide, QML, etc.
  • Appreciation of software development principles: object-oriented design, test-driven development, source code management, build and release processes
  • Experience leading and mentoring broad multidisciplinary teams and others around you
  • Expert level knowledge and substantial experience developing in at least one of the above listed niches within this industry
Education / Experience:
  • BS and/or advanced degree in computer science or related field, or similar experience
  • Typically 15+ years or demonstrated experience with professional software development and/or VFX production

ILM offers a competitive salary range of C$153,600 to C$196,700 per year, as well as a full range of medical, financial, and/or other variable pay or benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
