About the Opportunity
The Department of Critical Care at Cape Breton Regional Hospital (CBRH) is in search of a proficient and versatile intensivist to become part of our esteemed group. The successful candidate will engage in approximately 18 weeks of ICU duties annually. There are prospects for academic roles, research involvement, and participation in various leadership initiatives and quality enhancement projects.
Responsibilities
Our level-2 intensive care unit is staffed by two daytime intensivists who share night call duties. As an academic institution affiliated with Dalhousie University, we regularly host medical students, residents, and fellows in both ICU and General Internal Medicine. The ICU is responsible for all critically ill patients within the catchment area and is well-equipped with advanced technology for point-of-care ultrasound, percutaneous tracheostomy, transesophageal echocardiography, bronchoscopy, and acute hemodialysis. Responsibilities are collaboratively managed between daytime staff, encompassing ICU coverage, Intermediate Medical Care Unit (IMCU) duties, consultations, and code blue responses during daytime hours.

Qualifications
- Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada with Critical Care designation, or eligible for examination.
- Medical Doctorate (MD) or equivalent with completed Critical Care subspecialty qualifications.
- Two recent references of good standing.
- Possess or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
Community Details
CBRH serves as the referral hospital for Cape Breton Island and Eastern Nova Scotia, catering to a population of approximately 150,000. Our facility is well-staffed with every medical subspecialty. Surgical services encompass general surgery, orthopedic surgery, ENT, urology, OBGYN, and plastic surgery. CBRH is currently undergoing a significant $500 million redevelopment project, which includes the construction of a new clinical services tower. This new facility will feature a state-of-the-art combined ICU and Intermediate Medical Care Unit (IMCU) with 22 beds, an 8-bed Coronary Care Unit, and a cardiac catheterization lab. The hospital offers numerous residency opportunities and will be the primary center for hands-on training with the anticipated opening of the Cape Breton University medical school in 2025. Research initiatives are expanding within the unit, supported by research nurse coordinators and ongoing clinical trials.
