At CBC/Radio-Canada, we are dedicated to creating content that informs, entertains, and connects Canadians across various platforms. Our achievements are rooted in our core values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness, and relevance. If you possess the capability and enthusiasm to thrive in this dynamic and evolving industry, we invite you to join a team committed to making meaningful connections and sharing stories that resonate with Canadians.

Your Role
CBC Yukon is seeking a skilled journalist to spearhead a team focused on innovative local storytelling across audio, digital, video, and social media platforms. We are looking for an individual who is decisive, creative, and passionate about the unique aspects of the Yukon, including its people, communities, cultures, landscapes, languages, arts, sports, politics, and businesses.

As Indigenous peoples assert their rights and influence, and as new immigrant communities emerge, the Yukon is a territory undergoing transformation, offering opportunities for learning, exploration, and career development.

Your primary responsibility as an audio show producer will involve managing our three daily audio programs, collaborating with dedicated hosts, an associate producer, and reporters. You will be tasked with assigning, editing, and organizing segments for Yukon Morning, Midday Cafe, and Airplay. Leading daily team meetings, coordinating story pursuits, making decisions on audio presentations, writing scripts, conducting interviews, and collaborating with News, Digital, and Video Producers and reporters across the North and Canada will be essential aspects of your role. You will have the chance to propose ideas and initiatives that engage and expand our audiences by highlighting and amplifying intricate Northern narratives.

We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:

  • A relevant post-secondary degree or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, with at least 3 years in broadcasting or a closely related field.
  • A strong understanding of the Yukon's diverse social, political, and cultural landscape.
  • Proven experience in leading a team or unit.
  • Experience in gathering audio and producing segments for radio broadcasts.
  • Experience in producing daily current affairs-driven programs.
  • A demonstrated understanding of digital, video, and mobile platforms.
  • Exceptional editorial decision-making, critical thinking, and listening skills.
  • A thorough knowledge of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Proven ability to exercise quick, decisive, and sound editorial judgment.
  • Highly developed vetting skills.
  • Effective and cooperative communication abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficient editing and production skills in Dalet and other audio editing software.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a production team.
  • A valid driver's license and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.

Can you envision yourself in this role?
You possess a deep understanding of broadcast journalism, responsive news coverage, digital initiatives, and strategic social media storytelling. You are eager to explore new storytelling methods across both established and emerging platforms. You recognize the significance of public media in fostering a vibrant local community and have experience in creating content that reflects a diverse range of lived experiences.

You are an exceptional writer and communicator, with strong vetting skills. Your curiosity drives you, and you approach your work with initiative. You thrive in fast-paced environments, demonstrating thoughtfulness and collaboration. Flexibility and adaptability are among your strengths.

As a confident, compassionate, and inclusive leader, you inspire others to excel. You have experience mentoring and coaching team members with diverse backgrounds and skills. You are attuned to community conversations and find ways to incorporate those voices into your work. You welcome new ideas and constructive feedback.

You are an adept planner and organizer, capable of collaborating effectively with a small team in high-pressure situations, from initial concept to execution. You are committed to fostering trust with our audiences by catalyzing, reflecting, and responding to Yukon stories in our daily programming.

You understand the nuances of different platforms and how to tailor stories to leverage each platform's strengths.

As part of your responsibilities, you will:

  • Coordinate resources and coverage plans for daily content creation, special projects, series, remote broadcasts, and streaming content, focusing on CBC Yukon's three daily audio shows.
  • Lead story meetings.
  • Contribute to the preparation of content for local, regional, and national audiences, including assigning, researching, gathering, writing, and editing.
  • Write, vet, and review scripts and question lines for the shows.
  • Engage in critical analysis of story selections, treatments, and placements, providing constructive feedback.
  • Collaborate with hosts to enhance delivery and performance.
  • Work with hosts to determine the style, pace, tempo, lineup, and format of shows.
  • Regularly connect with newsmakers, organizations, and community groups to develop a database of story ideas and programming specials.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and coaching to both experienced and developing journalists.
  • Be prepared to work flexible hours and overtime as needed.
