Position Overview

The Counsellor, under the supervision of the Director of Accessibility and Student Wellness, plays a crucial role in delivering personal and psychological support services to enrolled students. This position also involves the development of educational outreach initiatives and the management of specific campus support programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive psychological counselling services to students, which includes: initial assessments, therapeutic sessions addressing a variety of personal and psychological issues, case management, referrals, crisis intervention, trauma support, and coordination of care with other support staff.
  • Maintain confidential case files and documentation in accordance with licensing requirements and institutional policies.
  • Stay informed on the latest research and best practices in the field of personal and psychological counselling.
  • Design and implement educational outreach and training programs as necessary.
  • Provide expert consultation to Student Affairs personnel regarding student mental health and wellness concerns.
  • Collaborate with various campus services, including the Wellness Centre and Health Services, as appropriate.
  • Oversee the updating of promotional materials and documentation related to counselling services.
  • Compile monthly and annual statistics regarding counselling service usage.
Qualifications and Skills

  • Master's degree in Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification with the relevant professional bodies.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience, ideally within an academic setting.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication abilities.
  • Proficient public speaking skills, with a proven track record in developing and delivering presentations.
  • Experience in organizing outreach and educational initiatives.
  • Background in training and supervising volunteers or student staff.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with clients who have faced trauma, particularly related to sexual violence.
  • Adept at functioning effectively within a collaborative team environment.
Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Experience engaging with young adults in educational or direct service roles.
  • Certification as a Mental Health First Aid Instructor or in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, or similar mental health training.
  • Encouragement for applications from diverse backgrounds, including racialized communities, Indigenous individuals, persons with disabilities, and individuals of all sexual and gender identities, to enhance the diversity of the campus community.
