Senior Urban Planner

Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Planner to join our Planning and Development team. As a senior professional, you will play a key role in leading and directing a team of planners and assignments, providing technical assistance and information to staff and the public on complex planning matters.
Key Responsibilities:- Supervise and direct a team of planners and assignments, providing guidance and support to ensure successful project outcomes.
- Act as a liaison between citizens, government agencies, developers, and elected officials, fostering effective communication and collaboration.
- Evaluate and process complex planning applications, including subdivision applications, permits, site plans, development agreements, and land use by-law amendments.
- Prepare and present detailed reports and recommendations on planning matters to staff, boards, committees, and council.
- Conduct field evaluations and assessments, providing expert advice and guidance to stakeholders.
- Represent the business unit or municipality on various planning-related issues, advising senior management, committees, and council on key matters.
- Maintain regular contact and liaison with other HRM business units, community groups, and intergovernmental organizations, fostering cooperation and collaboration.
- Direct and undertake research and analysis, leading multidisciplinary project teams, including consultants.
- Mentor and develop staff through delegation, coaching, mentoring, and training, ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed.
- A Master's degree in Community Planning or equivalent, with a minimum of six years of related and progressive experience in a professional planning environment.
- An undergraduate degree from a similarly accredited university planning program may also be considered, with a minimum of eight years of related and progressive experience.
- A Licensed Professional Planner as per the NS Professional Planners Act is required.
- Valid driver's license and supervisory experience are considered assets.
- Advanced knowledge of planning philosophies, principles, practices, and techniques, including cross-functional knowledge involving other disciplines.
- Well-developed knowledge of one or more planning disciplines, such as land use planning, community development, urban design, heritage conservation, housing, parks and recreation, transportation planning, or environmental/natural resources planning.
- Demonstrated skills in project management, facilitation, conflict resolution, negotiation, conducting presentations, communicating, influencing, and leading group discussions.
