About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Labour Relations Strategist to join our team at Dalhousie University. As Assistant Vice-President - Labour and Employee Relations, you will play a vital role in leading our university's efforts to fulfill its strategic commitments relating to labour relations matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and Lead Labour Relations Strategies: Collaborate with senior leaders across the university to develop and implement effective labour relations strategies that align with our institution's goals and objectives.
  • Collective Bargaining and Negotiation: Lead the formulation of strategy and research for collective bargaining and negotiation of collective agreements, and act as a key spokesperson for the Board of Governors in these matters.
  • Labour and Employee Relations Expertise: Provide expert advice and guidance on labour and employee relations matters to senior leaders and other stakeholders, and lead the development and implementation of ongoing formal orientation and education on these topics.
  • Culture and Inclusion: Uphold and champion our university's commitment to fostering a collegial culture grounded in respect and inclusion, and deliver labour and employee relations services that support employment equity goals, diversity, and inclusiveness.
  • Team Leadership: Oversee and lead a team of professionals within the labour and employee relations portfolio, and provide strategic support and counsel to senior leaders across the institution.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: Law degree plus ten or more years' related, progressive experience in labour relations, and experience building, developing, and leading functionally diverse teams.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Strong knowledge of employment legislation and labour relations processes, including grievances and arbitration, collective bargaining, accommodation, and discipline. Demonstrated leadership ability, conflict resolution and mediation skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities autonomously in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication (oral, written, and presentation) skills with individuals at all levels, and a demonstrated ability to listen and advocate appropriately.
  • Additional Assets: Familiarity with labour and employee relations within a university setting, an established network of industry contacts, related education or certification, and membership in local and/or national HR Associations or other organizations relevant to HR.
