Position Overview

Join Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as an HIV/AIDS Community Health Nurse

Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking a dedicated Nurse to become part of the team at a community health center focused on HIV/AIDS initiatives. This is an opportunity to contribute to a vital cause within the healthcare sector.

About the HIV/AIDS Outreach Team:

The HIV/AIDS Outreach Team operates as a comprehensive case management unit, consisting of nurses, social workers, and outreach professionals who support individuals living with HIV. The goal is to assist clients in overcoming barriers to care and treatment adherence, ultimately guiding them towards more independent health management.

Responsibilities of the HIV/AIDS Community Health Nurse:

  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to deliver outreach services to at-risk populations and communities affected by HIV/AIDS.
  • Provide essential primary healthcare services, including immediate assessments, interventions, and treatments.
  • Conduct pre- and post-test counseling for HIV testing, offering ongoing support and referrals to address both physical and emotional needs.
  • Educate clients on harm reduction strategies and provide counseling on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV in various community settings.
  • Distribute harm reduction supplies to those in need.
  • Partner with community organizations to reach populations at heightened risk for STDs and HIV.
  • Work with AIDS organizations to develop and implement educational workshops and programs tailored to specific groups.
  • Assess health issues, behaviors, and challenges faced by at-risk individuals.
  • Engage in team efforts to devise innovative solutions to client challenges and participate in relevant research initiatives.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • A minimum of two years of recent clinical nursing experience in community settings or Indigenous-led organizations, specifically in HIV/AIDS care.
  • Certification in Reproductive Health (STIs) is required.
  • Valid BC Driver's license and access to a vehicle for work-related travel.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • In-depth understanding of nursing practices within a client-centered framework.
  • Familiarity with community development and health promotion strategies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of BCCNM Standards for Practice.
  • Strong understanding of HIV/AIDS, STIs, and communicable disease management.
  • Awareness of mental health issues and substance use treatment methodologies.
  • Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Care and Harm Reduction principles.
  • Proven ability to provide culturally safe care across diverse populations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Competence in managing challenging behaviors and crisis situations.
  • Physical capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.

The work schedule may vary based on operational needs. Successful candidates may need to undergo a Criminal Records Review Check.
