Position Overview
The Faculty Development Team at the University of Calgary is in search of a Full-time Regular Director to lead its fundraising efforts.
The Director of Development holds a pivotal role, reporting directly to the Senior Director of Development and the Dean of the Faculty. This position is tasked with steering a dedicated team focused on educational and interdisciplinary priorities. The Director will be instrumental in strategic planning and the formulation of procedures that enhance key fundraising operations, aligning with the University's development objectives and fostering partnerships.
Key Responsibilities (the following duties are inclusive but not limited to):
- Engaging stakeholders effectively in the creation and execution of fundraising strategies and nurturing donor prospects.
- Recruiting, training, and motivating volunteers, staff, and faculty to support fundraising initiatives and directly engage with corporations, foundations, and individuals to secure financial contributions.
- Ensuring adherence to all relevant institutional policies and guidelines.
- Contributing to the achievement of university-wide fundraising goals.
- Collaborating with the Dean and Senior Director of Development to establish fundraising performance metrics.
- Working alongside the Advancement Office to synchronize fundraising planning and execution with the broader University objectives.
- Providing leadership in crafting both short-term and long-term strategic fundraising plans.
- Designing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising strategy that encompasses annual giving, sponsorships, major gifts, specialized campaigns, and legacy contributions.
- Developing prospect lists and assisting the Dean and other leaders in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donor relationships.
- Composing briefs, proposals, stewardship reports, and other compelling fundraising materials.
- Establishing and leading a donor stewardship program aimed at increasing donor engagement and gift sizes.
- Upholding Prospect Management Guidelines.
- Ensuring effective alumni engagement strategies are executed in alignment with university-wide initiatives.
- Collaborating with faculty administration members responsible for external relations and communications to effectively position fundraising activities.
- Leading a small team and managing fundraising resources (budget, senior officials, staff, and volunteers) in accordance with overall University goals.
- Practicing ethical fundraising in alignment with the University's mission and values, adhering to charitable giving standards.
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of current trends in fundraising and alumni engagement.
- Engaging in ongoing professional development as a fundraiser.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- A university degree in a relevant field, ideally in Business or Communications.
- A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in fundraising.
- Prior experience in the non-profit sector, a post-secondary educational environment, or a large, complex organization is preferred.
- Proven experience in soliciting major gifts ($25,000) and principal gifts ($100,000) is essential.
- Certification as a Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) is preferred.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong judgment and decision-making abilities, with the capacity to work independently.
- Excellent organizational capabilities.
- Ability to coach and mentor academic leaders in fundraising practices.
- Capacity to work under pressure, manage multiple timelines, oversee professional staff, negotiate with donors, and engage with a diverse clientele.
- Requires strong leadership, diplomacy, and foresight.
