Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Allergy Technologist to join our team at BC Children's Hospital. As an Allergy Technologist, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the success of our Outpatient Allergy Clinic.

Key Responsibilities
  • Calibrate and maintain spirometers and nebulizers for inhalation challenges and perform tests of forced expiratory breathing (spirometry) according to ATS guidelines.
  • Assist in preparing patient charts for upcoming clinics by filling charts with pertinent requisitions for testing and ordering special drugs and vaccines as required.
  • Obtain patient data, including height and weight, and complete standardized questionnaires.
  • Perform exercise and inhalation challenge tests, as well as skin testing on patients, measuring welt sizes and comparing them to negative and positive controls.
  • Order and prepare test materials and perform drug challenge tests, including venom and vaccine testing.
  • Provide education to parents and children on environmental control measures, inhaled medication delivery, and avoidance of foods, drugs, and venoms in life-threatening allergy.
  • Order additional clinical supplies and samples for the Allergy Clinic as needed.
  • Assist in preparing clinic statistics for decision support and billing purposes.
  • Perform and document equipment maintenance as scheduled and recognize and report malfunctions.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of policy and procedures for the assigned work area.
Requirements
  • Certification with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
  • Graduation from a recognized program in Medical Laboratory Technology, plus one year of recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited program in Medical Terminology.
  • Current CPR course.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children of all ages and perform procedures on children.
  • Ability to communicate with parents to alleviate anxiety associated with procedures.
  • Ability to organize workload and set priorities.
  • Technical knowledge and competence to perform assigned procedures.
  • Ability to operate hospital computer systems and related equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada, as per the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities impacting Indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism reports.
