The Indigenous Wellness Core (IWC) plays a critical role in this effort, working in collaboration with external partners to support innovation and improvement in Indigenous Health. As a key member of the IWC, the Indigenous Wellness Coordinator will provide advocacy, counseling, support, education, and facilitation of traditional Indigenous wellness services to patients, families, and health professionals.

Description:

The Indigenous Wellness Coordinator will establish responsive, sensitive, and consultative relationships with Indigenous patients, families, and health professionals, recognizing the historical impacts of colonization and the diversity of Indigenous cultures and worldviews. The Coordinator will provide education about respectful relationships and healthcare for Indigenous people, building increased understanding and trust between Indigenous peoples and healthcare providers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide advocacy, counseling, and support to Indigenous patients and families
  • Facilitate traditional Indigenous wellness services and education
  • Establish and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities and healthcare providers
  • Develop and implement culturally sensitive healthcare programs and services

Required Qualifications:

  • Recognized by an Indigenous community as being competent in the use of traditional Indigenous practices
  • Training and guidance in the use of traditional Indigenous approaches to wellbeing
  • Ability to facilitate connection to traditional wellness practices

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Secondary degree in healthcare or social sciences
  • College certificate/diploma in a related healthcare discipline
  • Ability to speak or understand traditional languages within Northern Alberta
