Job Summary

We are seeking a qualified English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor to join our team at School District #41 (Burnaby). The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching level-appropriate Literacy-English skills to adult immigrant and refugee newcomers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach ESL classes to adult learners, focusing on vocabulary development, grammar, speaking and listening, reading and writing, and settlement themes.
  • Monitor student progress through portfolio-based language assessments and provide feedback to students.
  • Connect students to the community through field trips and guest speakers.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure a cohesive and effective ESL program.
Requirements
  • PBLA Certificate
  • Blended Courses- Require LearnIT2Teach- Stage 2
  • Valid TESOL certificate recognized by TESOL Canada
  • Undergraduate Degree
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience, preferred, teaching ESL to adults and knowledge of Canadian Language Benchmark competencies and associated resources OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Able to use a variety of tech tools, including email, Microsoft Office, and Teams.
  • Ability to communicate fluently and accurately in both written and oral English.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and courteously with students, staff, and the public who may come from differing cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize, and complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain current in CLB competencies and associated resources.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with current technology tools, online learning platforms, and social media resources.
  • Ability to set and maintain boundaries with staff and students and manage self-care.
