Position Overview: The University of Toronto invites applications for a Sessional Lecturer position within the Faculty of Arts & Science, specifically in the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy.

Course Information: The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching GLA2067H, a course titled 'Topics in Global Justice II: Fragile Foundations: State Weakness, Violence, and Democratic Decay in Latin America'. This course delves into significant historical challenges faced by Latin America, exploring themes such as state formation, violence, and the intricacies of democratic governance.

Course Objectives: The curriculum is designed to engage students with critical inquiries in political science, including:

  • The origins of state fragility
  • The distinctions between criminal and political violence
  • The prevalence of violent conflict in specific global regions
  • The historical challenges to democratic governance in developing nations
  • Indicators of democratic regression

Enrollment and Support: The estimated class size is 30 students, and there will be no Teaching Assistant support for this course.

Class Schedule: Lectures will be held weekly, with a commitment of one 2-hour session.

Delivery Method: Currently, the course is planned to be delivered in-person, though this may be subject to change based on departmental guidelines.

Appointment Duration: The appointment will span from the beginning of the academic term until the end of the semester.

Compensation: Salary will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience, in accordance with the collective agreement.

Qualifications: A PhD in Political Science with a specialization in Latin American studies is required. Previous teaching experience in this discipline is preferred.

Responsibilities: Duties include developing course materials, conducting lectures, holding office hours for student consultations, preparing assessments, and grading student submissions.

Application Information: This position is governed by the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement. Preference will be given to candidates who meet the qualifications for advanced ranks within the Sessional Lecturer framework.
