Addiction Medicine Specialist

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a skilled Addiction Medicine Specialist to join our team at the North Sydney Recovery Support Centre. As a key member of our inter-professional clinical team, you will provide evidence-informed withdrawal management and related mental health and addiction care in an outpatient setting.
Key Responsibilities- Assess and manage substance use disorders, working collaboratively with the clinical team to develop and implement effective care plans.
- Initiate and monitor withdrawal management protocols, ensuring timely and safe care for our clients.
- Assess and manage other medical and psychiatric disorders as indicated, providing comprehensive care to our patients.
- Conduct risk assessments and interventions for suicide, self-harm, or harm to others, prioritizing patient safety and well-being.
- Develop and implement care and discharge plans in collaboration with the client, clinical team, and family, ensuring seamless transitions of care.
- Support the facilitation of transitions of care across various settings, promoting continuity of care and patient satisfaction.
- Provide trauma-informed and culturally safe care, respecting the unique needs and experiences of our clients.
- Deliver brief interventions related to substance use and concurrent disorders, empowering patients to achieve optimal health outcomes.
- Maintain timely, clear, and accurate health records in adherence to Nova Scotia Health documentation policies, ensuring compliance and quality care.
The successful candidate will work a total of 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.
Qualifications- Current certification in Addiction Medicine through a recognized professional organization, such as the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) or the International Society of Addiction Medicine (iSAM).
- Active credentials and privileges with the Nova Scotia Health Authority.
- Maintenance of liability insurance through the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
Clinical experience in practicing Addiction Medicine is an asset, but not a requirement. Training and mentoring opportunities are available for those with limited or no clinical experience in this setting.
