Position Overview
The Laboratory Research Specialist will be responsible for operating lithium metal casting and processing apparatus, conducting laboratory experiments, maintaining process documentation, and analyzing experimental outcomes. This role is primarily based at General Fusion's facilities in Richmond, BC, and may involve flexible hours or shift work.
Key Responsibilities
- Assemble and operate specialized equipment within the laboratory environment
- Set up, operate, and maintain lithium casting machinery
- Conduct machining tasks on lithium materials (e.g., lathe, roller)
- Safely manage high-temperature and rotating machinery
- Assist in the maintenance and enhancement of laboratory equipment
- Execute routine and unique experimental procedures
- Handle materials within a glovebox setting
- Promote and adhere to safe working practices
- Maintain an organized, clean, and efficient workspace
- Prepare documentation and present findings during team discussions
- Contribute positively to the workplace environment
- Work autonomously while proactively seeking necessary information from colleagues and documentation prior to commencing tasks
Relevant Skills and Experience
Required:
- 2-4 years of relevant experience
- Hands-on approach to work
- Strong interdisciplinary skill set with experience in the installation, operation, and troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical systems
- Basic machine shop proficiency (manual mill, lathe, bandsaw, etc.) and familiarity with power tools
- Proven ability to interpret results and communicate findings effectively
- Self-driven with the capability to work independently as well as collaboratively
- Positive attitude towards repetitive tasks and meticulous attention to detail
- Adaptability to a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities
- Effective time management abilities
- Competence in basic computer applications (Excel, Word, OneNote, SharePoint, Teams, Slack, etc.)
- Ability to lift 20 kg
- Strong commitment to team-oriented safety practices
Preferred:
- Practical experience with diverse mechanical and electrical equipment in a research or product development laboratory
- Experience with pilot-scale and prototype machinery
- Knowledge of chemical handling procedures
- Experience in glovebox operation and maintenance
- Familiarity with molten metal handling
- Experience with rotating machinery
- Experience using lifting equipment (forklift, gantry cranes, rigging, etc.)
- Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- Experience with vertical lathe operation
- Welding and fabrication expertise
- Familiarity with 3D CAD design software (SolidWorks)
