The Strain Improvement Laboratory is seeking a Research Scientist to join our team We help to meet the diverse commercial needs of the company by improving the industrial properties of yeast, bacterial, and fungal strains. This position reports to the Strain Improvement Lab R&D Manager.

The selected candidate will serve in leading and/or supporting roles for multiple parallel strain development projects, deploying an array of techniques to improve strain properties and meet project objectives. This position involves hands‑on laboratory work as well as experimental planning and ownership of project progress.

The main functions of the position are:

- Development of new microbial strains using a variety of evolution, selection, or engineering strategies in the laboratory

- Independent design, execution, and analysis of experiments; synthesis of results and organized documentation and management of data

- Development and validation of new methods to achieve technical goals

- Dissemination of findings through written reports and oral presentations

- Literature review and technology scoping associated with R&D project needs

- Training and supervision of student interns; training of team members in new lab procedures

- Contribution to a safe, efficient, and collaborative laboratory working environment

Technical skills

Required

- Hands‑on experience related to improvement of microbial strains; e.g. molecular biology, genetics, and/or evolutionary engineering techniques

- Depth of knowledge of yeast or bacteria physiology, cellular biology, and/or microbial genetics

- Demonstrated ability to develop and validate new technical approaches

- 4+ years’ experience in academic research or an industrial R&D setting

An asset

- PhD in molecular or cellular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related field; candidates with a master’s degree with relevant experience, particularly in an industrial setting, will also be considered

- Hands‑on experience with development of high throughput or ultra‑high throughput microbial screening assays

- Expertise in statistical analysis and/or data management

- Bilingual (English and French), written and spoken
