Position Summary

BCIT's Health, Safety & Environment department is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Occupational Hygiene Coordinator. The Occupational Hygiene Coordinator provides guidance and direction on the interpretation, administration and implementation of Occupational Hygiene policies, programs and procedures to ensure the health and safety of staff, students and visitors. Additionally, this position ensures that facilities, property, equipment and procedures comply with BCIT Campus policy and statutory requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

- Develops, implements and maintains BCIT occupational health and safety programs as required by BCIT Policy, the Worker's Compensation Board (WCB) Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, and other appropriate legislation.
- Assists departments in developing safety plans and safe work procedures for specific work areas and/or work activities.
- Attends and acts as a resource at various Occupational Health and Safety Committee meetings, to ensure that the direction of committees and terms of reference are in line with overall health and safety goals.
- Conducts risk assessments to evaluate environments, processes, department inventories, and worker demographics to identify potential health risks to persons or departments.
- Assesses occupational exposure to hazards through a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to determine health risks and regulatory compliance.
- Recommends effective control measures to mitigate occupational health and safety issues via elimination, engineering, administrative, or personal protective methods.
- Communicates risks and effective control methods of occupational hygiene issues to affected departments, including employees, supervisors, and management.
- Assists and guides members of the BCIT community in conducting incident investigations.
- Audits incident investigation reports for completion and appropriateness of corrective actions.
- Ensures all required documentation related to accidents and injuries, including WCB and Institute Insurance Programs, are completed and submitted in a timely manner to relevant areas as required.
- Investigates safety queries from the BCIT community and provides recommendations for corrective actions as appropriate.
- Develops and administers education/training materials/sessions on Occupational Health and Safety Programs for the BCIT community.
- Performs ergonomic assessments for the BCIT community.
- Maintains ongoing training in Emergency Response and First Aid.
- Maintains a highly visible presence on campus during the completion of the above tasks.
- Participates in Records Custodian training and remains current with record keeping practices, policies and procedures (both BCIT and FOIPOP).
- Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.

Qualifications

- A Master's degree in occupational health and safety, plus additional specialized training in occupational exposure monitoring methods, WHMIS, laboratory safety, ergonomics, hearing conservation, asbestos management, lead management, indoor air quality, confined space entry, fall protection, protective equipment, fire safety, electrical safety and environmental management.
- Other relevant occupational health and safety education plus experience will be considered.
- Two years general experience in a relevant Occupational Health and Safety position plus up to two years practical, current experience in a similar position (which includes working with applicable legislation, preferably in an institution of higher learning with a School of Trades).
- Additional experience in occupational exposure monitoring methods, WHMIS, laboratory safety, ergonomics, hearing conservation, asbestos management, lead management, indoor air quality, confined space entry, fall protection, protective equipment, fire safety, electrical safety and environmental management is desirable.
- Must have valid driver's license.
- Basic word processing and database skills, preferably in a Windows 8 environment, with working knowledge of Simply Safety, Archibus and IRIMS and/or similar database programs.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
- Analytical reasoning and problem solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of a team.
- Knowledge of Workers' Compensation Board Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, the Workers' Compensations Act and applicable municipal, provincial and federal regulations.

Salary Range

Salary Grade OHSH: $92,552 - $99,630 per annum.

Additional Salary Information

External hires are initially placed at the minimum of the salary range with set progressions to the maximum as per the Collective Agreement. Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
