As the third largest school district in the province, we are located within a 40- minute drive from downtown Vancouver. The school district has a population of 34,000 students with approximately 4,500 teaching, administrative, managerial and support staff. Working under the direction of the District Principal of Indigenous Education; this individual will receive assignments and direction from the Indigenous Education Department and report to a school Administrator / designate. The Indigenous Cultural Facilitator develops and implements an Indigenous Cultural program to students and school staff that focuses on the traditional territory of the Coast Salish peoples, and other Indigenous cultural groups. Indigenous cultural programs enhance the school-based curriculum, providing increased opportunities for Indigenous Cultural awareness and promoting increased participation of Indigenous students in the school and local community. JOB DUTIES: Creates positive awareness, understanding and improves student's basic knowledge of the Kwikwetlem First Nation, Metis, Inuit, and other Indigenous cultural groups within the context of integrating Indigenous culture and history, including designs, drawings, paintings, and carvings into the curriculum. Liaises and works closely with the classroom teacher and the school -based principal to support the implementation and effective delivery of the Indigenous Art/Culture program for students. May also work assisting students with the core curriculum at the appropriate grade level(s) as it relates to enhancing knowledge of Indigenous culture. Implements group and/or whole class programs in Indigenous studies under the direction of the teacher. Facilitates promoting cultural awareness for other members of the school community and contributes actively to the building of an Indigenous presence in the schools by encouraging parent participation as learners and teachers of their child's cultural heritage. Develops, in consultation with teachers, strategies that will enhance the personal, social, and cultural development of students. Liaises with and uses a network of Indigenous parents, bands, urban organizations and other community resources to support the Indigenous Cultural Program, and assists schools in using appropriate Indigenous community resources to enhance the cultural program of the students. In consultation with the local community, Indigenous Communities and parents may assist and participate in the planning, organization, delivery and supervision of field trips, social events, sports, and activities/ experiences in Indigenous culture, heritage and spirituality. Maintains files and records regarding services provided to students as requested by the Indigenous Education Department. Maintains daily logs on individual students and submits a monthly report to the District Principal for Indigenous Education. Collaborates with the Indigenous Youth Workers by providing knowledge, skills, and guidance around the cultural teachings to support Indigenous students. Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: Grade 12 graduation and completion of one-year post-secondary education program in Indigenous Education is required. Thorough knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions and values demonstrated through Indigenous ancestry and/or two (2) years of personal involvement and experience with Indigenous culture and traditions. BC Driver's License required.
