Overview

Are you looking for a role that will challenge you? Can you provide consultations, advice and technical support to projects? Would you like to be responsible for supporting assigned facilities and projects and for Radiation protection (RP) program management and oversight? This position at Chalk River offers the opportunity to provide technical support and develop and implement elements of the RP compliance program.

What will you be doing

- Developing and implementing RP controls, processes and procedures.
- Completing radiological safety and dose assessments.
- Performing ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) and post-work ALARA assessments and reviews.
- Reviewing design documents.
- Reviewing and approving requests to release material and personnel involved in contamination events out of the Controlled Area.
- Documenting justification and ALARA reviews for exceptions to RP Program requirements for review and approval by the RP Program Manager.
- Completing reviews for pregnancy declaration and medical needs.
- Preparing, reviewing and/or approving radiological work plans/procedures, employee dose control points, radioisotope laboratory protocols, and indoor radioactive material storage areas.
- Responding to, investigating, and performing follow-up to RP-related unplanned events.
- Reviewing and approving radiation source registration and records, radiation source leak testing, and food & beverage rooms.
- Reviewing the selection and procurement of radiation and contamination monitoring equipment.
- Providing recommendations on scoping, characterization and release of radiological surveys consistent with the RP Program.
- Completing shielding calculations.
- Overseeing the design or modification of facilities to ensure doses to workers are ALARA.
- Providing training and presentations on RP topics.
- Depending on circumstances, successfully attain and maintain RP Group 1 qualification.
- Preparing, reviewing and/or revising radiation protection procedures and RP training material.
- Preparing or participating in annual RP program annual compliance reviews.
- Providing HP technical support aiding RP Program development & establishment of requirements.
- Assisting in developing, implementing and maintaining radiation protection performance models and metrics.
- Completing Apparent Cause Analysis, Effectiveness reviews, and fact-find reports as required.
- Monitoring RP-related non-conformances and corrective actions and performing RP compliance inspections.
- Attending meetings as and when needed.
- Providing consultative advice to project and facility management and the RP Program.
- Working with the operational HPs and RP field staff to help ensure safe work execution, provide mentorship and help implement RP Program requirements.
- Interacting with other compliance program staff to ensure HP recommendations consider the impact on the other compliance/operational programs in relation to the work and facility location.
- Interacting with external facilities where commercial work will be undertaken, such as the RP team or the license holder.
- Acting as the single point of contact for the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission concerning all aspects associated with commercial projects in ERM.
- Working collaboratively with others in a team environment to effectively achieve shared goals while ensuring high safety and continuing compliance with the RP Program.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for

- Education

- A Bachelor degree (Honours) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing (e.g. nuclear engineering, medical physics, health physics); or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership.

- Experience

- Must have five years of experience as a health physicist. Previously or currently qualified as a Group 1 Health Physicist in CNL is an asset.

- Knowledge of recommendations and guidelines of radiological protection standards.

- Knowledge and understanding of radiation protection philosophies, procedures, equipment and techniques used in radiological theory and radiation protection practice.

- Knowledgeable of Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s legislation (regulations and associated guidance & REGDOCs).

- Previous knowledge and experience with their implementation of the relevant transport regulations (including overseas and inter-province) for radioactive material by air, rail and road.

- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.

- Excellent writing skills applied to producing reports and correspondence.

- Demonstrate ability to supervise Health Physicists and/or project teams. Capable of making recommendations concerning selection, training, appraisal, and discipline of staff.

- Effective public speaking (in English) applied to delivering training, presentations and/or pre-job & post-job briefs.

- Ability to work collaboratively with others in a team environment.

- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to respect confidential employee information.

- Identify important information and convey it effectively in oral and written format to organizational members, industry colleagues, project partners and customers that positively impact organization success.

- Convey an understanding of the needs of others.

- Identify/capture/share information important to individual, team, project or organizational performance.

- Very capable in Microsoft software (i.e., MS Excel, Word, and Outlook email).

- Ability to correctly interpret and make decisions based on established requirements, procedures and practices.

- Security Clearance Eligibility Required

- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions

- Ability to wear protective clothing and work in a hazardous environment.
- Ability to perform job walk-downs and site inspections.
- Office work environment (computing, online meetings, taking/delivering virtual training), as well as plant walk-downs for planning, troubleshooting, auditing, and inspections.
- Capable of travel within Canada and abroad to support commercial projects both domestically and internationally.

This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee. CNL’s Chalk River laboratory is nestled in the Ottawa Valley and offers an area that is environmentally pristine with forests, hills and lakes, supporting wildlife typical to the southern edge of the Canadian Shield. Nearby towns such as Pembroke, Petawawa and Deep River provide outdoor opportunities.
