The Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) is one of two Tertiary Trauma Centers in the City of Edmonton and one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Canada. Centrally located in Edmonton’s downtown core, the RAH serves a diverse community, including some of our province’s most vulnerable and marginalized populations. The RAH Emergency department is looking for an Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) to provide critical front line operational support and leadership in a challenging and diverse Emergency Department environment. In this in-scope leadership position, the AHN provides guidance and support in daily staffing coordination, operational planning, program development, and equipment oversight. Collaborating closely with the unit leadership team, the AHN contributes to staff development initiatives, including supporting professional growth and competency assessments. The AHN maintains an emphasis on patient flow throughout the department, oversees resource allocation, and provides immediate frontline staff support. This role embraces and promotes a Patient and Family Centered Care philosophy, recognizing its importance in achieving optimal health outcomes. As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Minimum 3 - 5 years of tertiary emergency department experience. Emergency Department experience must be within the last 1 year. Resuscitation, Triage, and Charge nurse experience in an Emergency Department. Ability to actively support frontline patient care needs. Expert knowledge of emergency nursing care standards/protocols. Proven critical thinking and judgement required. Ability to communicate findings in a concise and accurate manner required. Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and leadership skills required. Proven ability to facilitate groups and manage change in a positive manner. Capable of working in a fast-paced environment with patients of varying mobility required. Proven reliability/dependability required. Preference will be given to those with the following certifications: Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Certified Emergency Nurse (CAN or CNE) an asset. Preference will be given to applicants that have shown initiative in leadership development (i.e. LEADS, Frontline Leadership Certification).
