Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Cchpbc Full time
Who We Are

The College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC (CCHPBC, or the College) is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. The College regulates over 10,000 health professionals, including chiropractors, massage therapists, naturopathic physicians, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, and acupuncturists across British Columbia.

Formed on June 28, 2024, through the amalgamation of four provincial health profession regulators, the College was established as part of the Ministry of Health's initiative to modernize the health profession regulatory framework in B.C. Its primary role is to protect public health and safety by licensing and regulating health professionals and the settings in which they practice. This includes ensuring that every health professional within its purview is fully qualified to provide safe and ethical care.

About This Employment Opportunity

The College is seeking a motivated individual with a strong academic record; a keen eye for detail; strong analytical, organizational and communication skills; curiosity; and the desire to work in service of the public interest in the newly created role of Paralegal/Administrator.

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Paralegal/Administrator will support the office of the General Counsel and in particular the creation and operation of new HPOA processes such as summary and administrative decision-making by the registrar and capacity evaluations by the capacity officer. The Paralegal/Administrator will also coordinate with other HPOA statutory decision-makers such as investigators, assurance assessors, and professional standards advisors. Additionally, the Paralegal/Administrator will support General Counsel acting as the College's privacy officer by assisting with the handling of freedom of information requests and responses to such requests, and also by assisting with the preparation of legal memoranda and briefing notes. This role will suit a paralegal who is looking for an alternative to working in private legal practice. While relevant experience is an asset, more junior candidates with a strong academic record and an interest in working in this area will also be considered.

It is essential for all College staff to contribute to a team approach with a public protection focus, delivering efficient services that align with and allow the College to meet its regulatory, strategic, and operational goals.

Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to)

- Overseeing creation and maintenance of physical and electronic files
- Creating and updating templates and precedents for summary and administrative disciplinary matters, and other HPOA regulatory processes
- Developing and overseeing file and case protocols
- Communicating with external parties including complainants, licensees, and others
- Preparing packages of material for review by statutory decision-makers
- Drafting or editing template letters as required, ensuring consistency in language and style, as well as accuracy
- Conducting legal research
- Coordinating with administrative staff in other departments
- Working with the records manager to ensure correct and HPOA-compliant storage and retention of various types of records
- Administrative support to the General Counsel, and other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the General Counsel

Qualifications and Skills

- Qualification as a paralegal (equivalent qualification or experience considered)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of applications
- Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat X Pro an asset
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to set and manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
- Excellent attention to detail
- Excellent written communication skills with the ability to proofread for spelling and grammatical errors
- Superior analytical and professional judgment with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential materials
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to communicate professionally with colleagues, external contractors, complainants, witnesses, registrants/licensees, and others
- Previous work experience as a paralegal and/or in a regulatory environment is an asset

An individual who meets either the established formal qualification or the accepted equivalency can be considered equally for this role.

Compensation and Perks

The compensation for this position ranges from $65,520 to $81,900 annually, based on a 37.5-hour work week. The starting salary will be determined by factors such as the candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, experience, the salaries of peers within the same range, market conditions, and other relevant considerations.

CCHPBC offers a competitive compensation package, including health, dental and vision benefits, employee assistance program, Municipal Pension Plan, and paid time-off package. Other perks include flexible hybrid work arrangement, professional development opportunities, and office closures for the 11 statutory holidays in B.C., as well as Easter Monday and Boxing Day.

Application Process

If you are interested in joining our team, please submit your resume and cover letter on our careers portal on our website, www.cchpbc.ca/about/#careers by January 17, 2025. This position will remain open until filled, but priority will be given to applications received by the deadline.
