Summary
Providence Health Care's Spiritual Health team is now accepting applications for a CPE Supervisor and Practitioner to join their team. Reporting to the Director, Spiritual Health & Pastoral Care, the CPE Supervisor and Practitioner contributes to the Clinical Psychospiritual Education (CPE) program within the framework of a Catholic Healthcare organization and in accordance with the PHC Mission, Vision, Values and Ethical Framework. The CPE Supervisor and Practitioner provides clinical spiritual services in collaboration with the interdisciplinary teams at assigned sites and is responsible for an engaged clinical presence as a practitioner as well as performing CPE responsibilities.
Your duties will include:
- Contributing to the development and implementation of a comprehensive, creative, and forward-thinking CPE program in alignment with the standards set by the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC).
- Providing excellent CPE education for basic to advanced CPE students, including didactics, supervision, coaching, planning, and oversight of the program.
- Participating in Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care team activities, including team meetings, Spiritual Health Week, retreats, and huddles.
- Providing spiritual support to patients, residents and their families who are considering or who are engaged in the MAiD process and educating students on end-of-life conversations and spirituality support of these.
- Promoting the on-going spiritual well-being of patients/residents through listening; prayer; and group support such as Memorial Services, spirituality groups, Study of Sacred text, and Hymn Sing. Planning and participating in facility-wide celebrations, such as Worship Services, Remembrance Day, and Memorial Services for individuals or groups.
What You Bring
Education, Training and Experience:
- Master's Degree in relevant theological/spiritual studies from an accredited theological institution.
- Certified in field of specialization as a Spiritual Health Practitioner.
- Certified Supervisor-Educator or may consider applicants with Provisional Supervisor-Educator (PSE) standing through a consultation process facilitated by the RAC and working under the supervision of a Certified Supervisor-Educator.
- Current membership in good standing in CASC.
- Continuing good standing in a spiritual, religious or faith community affiliated with one's chosen tradition.

Your Day to Day:
In collaboration with the CPE Supervisor and Educator:
- Contributes to the development and implementation of a comprehensive, creative, and forward-thinking CPE program in alignment with the standards set by the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC).
- Obtains program and course approval, as well as site accreditation, as required.
- Ensures eligibility for academic course credit at the Graduate Program level in collaboration with the Vancouver School of Theology, Regent College, St. Mark's College, seminaries, and other appropriate universities.
- Collaborates with the CPE Supervisor and Educator and Director of Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care to screen, place, monitor, and evaluate CPE students across PHC sites.
- Fosters collaboration with CPE Supervisors from other organizations to promote a coordinated approach to pastoral education within the region.
- Participates as a leader and/or member of the PHC CPE Advisory Board.
- Educates students in the unique spiritual care needs of residents and their families in long-term care, with a particular knowledge of understanding in dementia care.
- Builds a creative learning environment for students, seeking out speakers, colleagues, and team members for didactics in order to enhance student learning.
- Encourages excellence in preceptorship of staff members, including education and guidelines.
- Provides support for ongoing administrative CPE tasks for the program, including interviewing, onboarding, communications, EMR training, Learning Hub maintenance, student manual, policy updating, etc.
- Encourages student and staff awareness of, and respect for, different expressions of spirituality. Encourages staff to be aware of the strength that a patient/resident can experience through their beliefs and practices.
- Participates in Spiritual Health and Pastoral Care team activities, including team meetings, Spiritual Health Week, retreats, and huddles.
- Provides spiritual support to patients, residents and their families who are considering or who are engaged in the MAiD process and educates students on end-of-life conversations and spirituality support of these.
- Provides all spiritual health support and education in accordance with the expectations of Catholic Healthcare principles and Health Ethics Guidelines.
- Engages in research projects and opportunities both within and outside of the department.
- Participates in sharing on-call and/or back-up on-call duties, as required. Available to respond to organizational emergencies (Code Orange, Psychosocial Disaster Response Team, etc.) and act as a liaison during crisis intervention.
- Performs other related duties as required.
As a Practitioner:
- Assesses, and provides comprehensive spiritual and emotional support through counseling and supportive presence.
- Promotes the on-going spiritual well-being of patients/residents through listening; prayer; and group support such as Memorial Services, spirituality groups, Study of Sacred text, and Hymn Sing. Plans and participates in facility-wide celebrations, such as Worship Services, Remembrance Day, and Memorial Services for individuals or groups.
- Attends and participates in program-based care team meetings, rounds, huddles, case conferences, family meetings, ethics consults, and other meetings as required.
- Receives referrals from all disciplines and responds in a timely manner. Creates and implements follow up plans as required. Makes referrals to other disciplines, when appropriate, based on the needs of patients and residents.
- Engages counseling theories, interventions, and supportive activities for patients, residents, and families.
- Consistently documents in patient/resident medical records.
- Collaborates with spiritual/cultural representatives and clergy in the community.
- Provides spiritual and emotional support to staff during times of crisis.
- Maintains daily record of spiritual care activity offered to patients/residents and staff and submits these on a timely basis, as required.
- Mentors and supports volunteer visitors who provide ministry to patients/residents through religious/spiritual visits and participation in group events.
- Creates family support groups for family members whose loved ones are dealing with dementia.
