Construction Environmental Lead (Onsite) – Fredericton

We are currently looking for an Environmental Lead with experience in construction for an onsite role. This person will join Hatch's Environment & Sustainable Development team in the Fredericton office. The candidate should be familiar with the supervision of works and the performance of environmental audits on construction sites, as well as familiar with provincial and federal environmental regulations. They should also be familiar with environmental permit application processes in New Brunswick. This person will be called upon to work on a semi-remote site, North of Fredericton. It is expected the role might be on a rotation schedule.

The selected candidate will have good interpersonal skills in order to intervene with contractors with a view to continuous improvement and to correct non-conformities if necessary. They will also be comfortable building and maintaining lasting relationships with colleagues and our clients.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Project Onsite Environmental Lead is responsible for:

- Acting as a liaison agent between site contractor and the Project Environmental Manager.
- Providing leadership to a small team of environmental site monitors.
- Enabling improvement and updating Environmental Management Plan (EMP) to reflect changing environmental requirements or priorities, as required.
- Approving Contractor-Specific Environmental Protection Plans (C-SEPP).
- Ensuring effective management for adherence to requirements specified in EMP and all C-SEPPs, and in accordance with legislation and environmental goals of the project.
- Directing quality assurance of environmental monitoring performed by contractors.
- Managing the Projects Environmental Risk Register, Legal and Regulatory Compliance Matrix, as well as other Permit Matrices.
- Responsible for tracking and ensuring close out of corrective actions.
- Managing internal Project permitting (e.g., Land Disturbance Authorizations forms).
- Coordinating wildlife sweeps, surveys, or searches, when required.
- Fostering collaboration and leadership for investigation of environmental incidents and reporting.
- Undertaking targeted compliance inspections.
- Holding regular meetings with Contractor Representatives.
- Conducting regular general site inspections, and other Performance Assurance activities such as independent monitoring.
- Assuming role of Project Environmental Manager when appropriate (for replacement).
- Ensuring that the work complies with the regulations and laws in force as well as with the commitments resulting from environmental authorizations and permits.
- Approving and delivering on-site environmental orientation material and other training related to the environmental obligations of contractors and workers.
- Contributing to the drafting of specifications for certain subcontracted work.

Desired Profile

- Education in engineering or environmental sciences is an asset (technical or bachelor's degree); Master's is considered an asset.
- 10+ years of relevant experience in environmental and regulatory management of construction sites.
- Experience with wind energy and/or linear projects is considered an asset.
- Experience in working with engineering consulting firms or as a contractor is an asset.
- Ability to work in integrated teams across multiple disciplines.
- Attention to detail and good organizational skills.
- Positive attitude and desire to learn new skills.
- Great motivation to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Fluency in French is considered an asset, but not a requirement.
- Working knowledge of English (oral and written), including communication with clients and colleagues in other provinces.
- Collaborate on exciting projects to develop innovative solutions.
