The Salvation Army London Village has been an integral part of the London community since 1954, providing excellence in care to families in need. The London Village offers a variety of programs to meet the diverse needs of families, including a Child Care Centre, Respite Program for individuals with intellectual disabilities, and Adult Day Program for seniors. Our program site sits on 9 ½ acres of beautiful green space and offers a gymnasium, pool, pavilion, and playground equipment for everyone to enjoy. The Adult Day Program is a specialized day service for seniors with Alzheimer's and related forms of dementia and those with medical fragility looking for social engagement opportunities while providing a break to their family care providers. The environment is secure and homelike while offering personal supports such as personal care & hygiene and therapeutic recreational, social, educational opportunities, and special event programs.

The Adult Day Program is currently hiring a Relief Recreation Coordinator Position. This is a Casual/Relief position, and as a condition of your employment, you will be required to work or be available to work a minimum of 6 casual/relief shifts quarterly within the program if they have been available. Flexibility to meet program needs is required. This position is for someone that has a passion for and takes initiative in supporting areas such as personal care & hygiene, advocacy, and empowering each person we support to remain active, independent, and socially engaged.

Responsibilities:

The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for facilitating recreation programming that meets the needs, interests, and preferences of clients. The Recreation Coordinator will respectfully engage with seniors in person and/or virtually, ensuring a positive & enjoyable client experience.

Minimum Requirements:

1. Completion of a College Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation or related area of study.
2. Current Gentle Persuasive Approach training and Safe Food Handling Certification is an asset.
3. Current Standard First Aid & CPR Certification.
4. Montessori for Dementia Care certificate would be an asset.
5. U-First Training would be an asset.
6. Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Knowledge:

1. Minimum of one (1) year of prior work experience working with cognitively impaired/frail elderly populations.
2. Interest and previous experience or skills in crafts, music, art, fitness, etc.

Skills and Capabilities:

1. Bilingual in French is preferred, other languages an asset.
2. Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
3. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise good judgement.
4. Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
5. Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
6. Ensure that all certifications are maintained as required.
7. Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner.
8. Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation.
9. Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills, and respect authority.
10. Self-motivated/disciplined.
11. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
12. Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
13. Attention to detail, problem solving, and analytical skills.
14. Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
15. Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required - i.e. Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint; Email and Internet; ability to successfully interact with iPads/tablets and Smart Boards.
16. Ability to apply effective body mechanics and meet the physical demands of the position.
17. May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
18. Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
19. Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
