Position Summary

The Mental Health and Counseling Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting the emotional and psychological well-being of our training doctors throughout their equivalency journey. This position provides a safe and confidential space for individuals to express their challenges, manage stress, and develop healthy coping strategies as they navigate the demanding and often isolating process of returning to student life. The Counseling Specialist serves as a compassionate listener, guide, and advocate, helping training doctors balance academic pressure, personal life, and mental health, while fostering resilience, confidence, and community connection.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide one-on-one and group counselling sessions focused on emotional support, adjustment, and personal well-being.
- Develop and implement counselling and intervention programs to assist training doctors in determining goals and means of attaining them.
- Help training doctors cope with stress, performance anxiety, self-doubt, and the challenges of transitioning from professional to student life.
- Offer guidance and resources on topics such as time management, motivation, focus, and maintaining balance during intensive study periods.
- Develop and facilitate workshops or group discussions on mental wellness, resilience, mindfulness, and self-care.
- Identify signs of distress or burnout and provide early intervention or referrals to appropriate professionals when necessary.
- Collaborate with faculty, academic advisors, and wellness staff to ensure a holistic approach to student well-being.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop action plans and, when necessary, refer doctors to appropriate local mental health professionals.
- Support training doctors in building a sense of belonging, confidence, and purpose throughout their equivalency journey.
- Maintain accurate, confidential records and uphold the highest ethical and professional counselling standards.
- Participates in regular meetings and consultation meetings of teams – makes recommendations on the basis of the training doctors’ progress.
- Participate in orientation and wellness programming to create a supportive and inclusive environment from the very beginning of training.
- Act as a resource person as assigned.

Qualifications/Job Requirements

- Master’s degree in Counselling, Psychology, Education, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of counselling experience required; must be within adult education, professional retraining, and culturally diverse environments.
- Must have proven experience working with newcomer professionals to support with their career, study, culture shock and settlement issues
- Bi-lingual (English/Arabic) preferred
- Deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by internationally trained professionals (mostly, doctors) adapting to new academic and cultural systems in Canada
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a compassionate and culturally sensitive approach.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, trust, and professional boundaries.
- Proven experience in workshop facilitation and crisis intervention is a must.
