Position Summary
Applications are invited from qualified individuals to instruct in the Health Care Assistant Certificate program at the North Island College Comox Valley St. Joe's campus. This instructional assignment involves teaching the following practice courses to a Health Care Assistant cohort via a face-to-face delivery method. Practicum placements will take place in a variety of practice settings within the Comox Valley and may require travel. Applicants need to have access to reliable transportation.
Courses:
- HCA 145: Practice Experience in Home Support, Assisted Living, and/or Group Home Setting
- HCA 155: Practice Experience in Multi-Level and/or Complex Care
The successful candidate will implement creative strategies in the preparation and delivery of practice activities; use initiative in providing documentation and follow-up with regard to student concerns and problem resolution; and bring facilitation skills to the management of conflict. The schedule for this assignment will be flexible to meet the needs of the program.
The teaching faculty of North Island College are responsible for implementing the College's vision, goals, and objectives as they relate to teaching and learning. Faculty use organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and their knowledge of subject matter, pedagogy, and curricular design. They also have a responsibility to serve as role models for students and colleagues.
IMPORTANT NOTES: In accordance with the Criminal Records and Review Act, it is mandatory that faculty hired under the Faculty of Health and Human Services department have a clear Criminal Record.
Duties & Responsibilities
1. Instructional:
- To plan and prepare learning materials for instructional environments.
- To use a variety of approaches and materials, as appropriate, in order to address different learning needs.
- To teach in assigned subject areas and include all required subject matter in courses.
- To direct student learning in a positive, supportive, and caring environment.
- To be available to students regularly during scheduled office hours and classroom hours.
- To clearly communicate in writing learning outcomes for programs and courses.
- To design and conduct evaluations or appraisals of students.
- To submit grades in a timely manner.
- To maintain records of student enrollment and achievement.
2. Typical Professional Duties:
- To be aware of and work within College educational policies.
- To contribute to the development of the Education and Strategic plans.
- To advise the Department Chair regarding enrollment management and health and safety concerns.
- To maintain continuous professional development.
- To participate actively as a contributing member of the College community.
- To undertake other related responsibilities as assigned by the College.
Required Education & Experience
- Practical Nursing credential or BSN degree.
- Two years' experience teaching adults, preferably at the post-secondary level.
- Work experience in gerontics.
- Current registration with BCCNM (inclusive of Criminal Record).
- CPR Level HCP required.
Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Experience using a variety of creative and motivating approaches to stimulate learning.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in the use of computer applications, the internet, and MS Office software.
- Valid BC driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle is required.
