Hearing and Speech Nova Scotia (HSNS) provides audiology services to Nova Scotians of all ages, and speech-language pathology services to preschool children and adults. HSNS is funded by the NS Government to deliver integrated and standardized provincial services across 37 clinical sites, located in 26 communities. Nationally certified Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists, with support from Communication Disorder Technicians and Administrative Support Professionals, provide core services (prevention, diagnosis, and treatment), develop and monitor provincial clinical standards, and collaborate with partners to deliver a number of special programs (e.g., Autism, Stroke, Cochlear Implant). Established in 1963, HSNS works to prevent and reduce the impact of communication disorders for Nova Scotians.

We are accepting applications for the temporary, full-time position of Speech-Language Pathologist. The home base is Bayer’s Road and involves regular overnight travel across the province, especially to Cape Breton. This position supports autistic children and their families. The caseload assignment may include any of the services included within the Provincial Preschool Autism Service (e.g., Intensive Services, Focused Interventions, Early Start Denver Model, QuickStart Nova Scotia, HSNS Communication Services, Foundational Education). The successful candidate reports to the assigned Manager. Schedule to be determined.
Requirements:
- Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology
- Nova Scotia College of Audiologists & Speech-Language Pathologists (NSCASLP) licensure or eligible for licensure
- Effective communication skills, including proficiency in written and spoken English. If English is not your first language further documents will be required.
- Flexibility in work schedule to provide evening/weekend services
- Flexibility to travel on occasion to attend continuing education, events and/or meetings
- Candidates will have to demonstrate current immunization and/or boosters at the end of the probationary period
- Recent experience with provision of preschool speech and language assessment and treatment
- Familiarity with a variety of service delivery options for pediatric caseloads
- Knowledge of discipline specific best practices in assessment and early intervention of young children with developmental disabilities, specifically those with autism
- Demonstrated commitment to family-centered care
- Flexibility in work schedule to support outreach/parachute services
- Flexibility to travel throughout NS on a regular basis
- Valid Nova Scotia driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
Assets:
- Two years of experience with children with autism
- Two years of clinical experience within the last 5 years with provision of alternative and augmentative communication systems
- Experience with off-site/home-based service delivery model
- Experience working with interprofessional clinical teams and/or working with supportive personnel
- Experience with provision of services via telepractice
- Experience providing caregiver training and/or coaching
- Training and knowledge of Pivotal Response Treatment and Picture Exchange Communication System
- Lived experience with a communication difference
- Able to start immediately
