Building Automation Technologist

Position Summary
BCIT's Campus Planning and Facilities department is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Building Automation Technologist. This position is responsible for monitoring and improving Building Automation System operations, identifying and leveraging energy-efficient opportunities within various HVAC and lighting systems to reduce BCIT's greenhouse gas emissions in alignment with provincial regulations. Programs Building Management System (BMS), monitors system performance, creates and analyzes data trends, and ensures systems operate efficiently to reduce energy consumption, enhance occupant comfort, and maintain sustainability goals.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensures that the heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) and other systems under Building Management System (BMS) automated control are operated meeting established energy management guidelines and in accordance with defined control strategies, applicable bylaws, regulations, codes and standards, and best practices.
- Develops and maintains trend logs for building automation systems to monitor energy usage, environmental conditions, and equipment performance. Analyzes historical data to identify trends, troubleshoot issues, program and optimize system efficiency. Provides actionable insights to enhance energy performance across campus.
- Analyzes any issues related to temperature, humidity, static pressure, air flow, noise, air quality within the building automation system and recommends solutions or collaborates with technicians for implementation.
- Makes adjustments to system control logic, updates graphical user interfaces, and troubleshoots various building automation networks and protocols to ensure optimal system performance and integration.
- Communicates with individuals from a variety of departments within BCIT, and external contractors brought in to work on systems, including working with difficult or upset clients, describing problems and explaining the interrelation of complex systems.
- Coordinates and monitors the work of contractors to ensure adherence to established standards.
- Commissions equipment by testing the system to verify that devices respond appropriately to the specified parameters and instruction set.
- Stays current on new technology and regulatory requirements including changes to standards and codes related to the profession.
- Participates in Records Custodian training and remains current with record keeping practices, policies and procedures (both BCIT and FOIPOP).
- Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.
Qualifications
Education:
- Requires the equivalent of completion of specialized training programs of up to two years' duration. For example, a Diploma of Technology/Building Controls & Energy Management or completion of a two-year full-time program from a community college.
Experience:
- Requires two years' general experience plus up to four years' practical current experience on building automation systems and/or creating energy-efficient solutions in a dynamic campus environment, preferably in an institutional or commercial setting.
Technical Skills:
- Strong technical skills in building controls systems and energy management.
- Proficient in building automation software (e.g., entelliWeb, RCWebView, Niagara, Johnson Controls, etc.).
- Experience with HVAC, lighting control systems, and energy monitoring software.
- Able to program and troubleshoot DDC systems.
- Write and troubleshoot logic-based control programs using both line code and function block programming software.
- Knowledge of building codes, energy conservation standards, and sustainability practices.
- Operating knowledge of IT network architecture (such as Ethernet switches, firewalls, port forwarding etc. is an asset).
- Proficient with: Microsoft Office Suite.
Communication/Interpersonal Skills:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required for ongoing success of energy efficiency initiatives.
- Must be able to work independently and the proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve related issues in conjunction with the assigned level of skill, ability and education.
Other Skills/Abilities:
- Willingness to maintain currency in the field and learn on the job is essential.
- Project management experience is an asset.

Salary Range
Salary Grade 9: $66,284 - $71,964 per annum.
Additional Salary Information
External hires are initially placed at the minimum of the salary range with set progressions to the maximum as per the Collective Agreement. Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
