The Manager, Maintenance Services is responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for students and staff by overseeing maintenance services and managing hazardous materials. This role coordinates maintenance work, manages resources efficiently, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards. By leading a team of supervisors, administrative staff, and technical trades staff, the Manager contributes to the successful achievement of the department's goals and the overall operational effectiveness of the organization. The Manager, Maintenance Services participates in the Facility Services department’s management team and contributes to short‑and long‑term strategic planning activities that align with Division goals and objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITIES
Manage Maintenance Service Delivery (50%)
- Direct and oversee the maintenance of Division‑owned schools, buildings, and grounds to ensure a safe and healthy environment for students, staff, and visitors.
- Direct the performance review program for maintenance services, ensuring continuous improvement and high service levels.
- Collaborate with supervisors to direct and schedule maintenance work, ensuring timely completion and compliance with standards.
- Coordinate with vendors and contractors to ensure timely and effective completion of maintenance activities.
- Oversee the control and abatement of hazardous materials in schools and buildings, ensuring a safe environment for all occupants and workers.
- Collaborate closely with the Manager, Capital Projects to ensure operational efficiency and maintain consistency in service delivery in relation to the overall management of the Division infrastructure.
Preventative Maintenance Planning and Asset Tracking (30%)
- Develop and evaluate comprehensive preventative maintenance plans for all Division facilities and equipment.
- Conduct regular inspections and assessments to identify potential maintenance issues and address them proactively.
- Maintain accurate records of all assets, including their condition, maintenance history, and lifecycle status.
- Oversee the implementation and delivery of preventive maintenance programs to reduce downtime and extend the lifespan of facilities and equipment.
Team Development (10%)
- Coordinate with the Human Resource Department to address any issues related to maintenance staff, including performance management, training, and development.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment to enhance team performance and employee engagement.
- Lead the recruitment and selection processes to ensure the team is staffed with qualified and capable individuals.
- Develop and implement workforce and succession planning strategies to ensure the long‑term success and sustainability of the team.
Support Strategic Planning (10%)
- Participate in the department's and Division's short‑and long‑term strategic planning activities.
- Provide input on infrastructure needs and priorities, ensuring alignment with Division goals and objectives.
- Maintain technical knowledge through professional development activities to support strategic planning efforts.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
Knowledge:
- Degree in Engineering with related Professional Engineer (P. Eng) designation is required, with a minimum of 5 years of management or supervisory experience in a directly related field.
- Journeyman certification in a building trade, Facility Management certification (CFM), and/or other related certification is an asset.
- Experience with preventative maintenance and asset management is an asset.
- Strong understanding of maintenance principles, practices, and projects.
- Knowledge of human resource management theories, practices, and principles, including collective agreements.
- Familiarity with financial policies and procedures, tender processes, and contract law.
- Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation Board, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) legislation, acts, and regulations.
- General knowledge of the Division’s operations and business and general understanding of the Division’s mission and vision in a faith‑based environment.
- Knowledge of records management principles, the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA), and the Access to Information Act (ATIA).
- Knowledge of workplace safety and awareness of Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
- Knowledge and alignment with the Division's administrative procedures.
Skills:
- Proficiency in project management tools and software is an asset.
- Strong negotiation, analytical, and conflict resolution skills.
- Advanced time management skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Strong consultation and needs assessment skills.
