Job Title: HR Generalist
Department: Human Resources
Reports To: Director, Human Resources
Status: Exempt
Summary:
Responsible for providing support of the company's human resources practices, policies, and objectives. This role will provide and support a high-performance culture that emphasizes empowerment, quality, productivity, goal attainment, and the recruitment and ongoing development of a superior workforce. Responsible to ensure that all aspects of the Canadian and U.S. benefits administration are processed in a timely and accurate manner and in accordance with Company and government policies. Assists in the compilation of data for various reports and will provide support to the Human Resource function. Supports and coaches Newterra's managers, as well as individual employees (current and future) in human resources matters in a way that aligns with Newterra's strategy and desired outcomes. Maintains a high level of confidentiality in all interactions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports the full cycle of human resources services as directed.
- Advises, coaches, and supports managers throughout the organization on HR related information.
- Responsible for ensuring compliance with all steps of the employee lifecycle.
- Works as a backup on the recruitment processes and talent management.
- Supports Manager to ensure company compliance to relevant employment legislation in all jurisdictions in which it operates.
- Draft correspondence, policies, reports, proposals, job descriptions, unemployment compensation and other employment documentation.
- Maintains HRIS and related records systems in compliance with applicable legislation.
- Coordinate employee benefits and administration as necessary.
- Supports and articulates company policies. Ensures management and employee understanding of and promotes compliance with company policies.
- Responsible for maintaining the HRIS database, including but not limited to new hires and updating existing employees as needed.
- Provides input and improves internal human resources processes and systems to support departments and their operations in an effective and efficient manner including:
- Staffing: Recruitment and Terminations.
- Onboarding.
- Training and Development.
- Total Rewards: Base Salary, Incentives, Benefits, Recognition.
- Performance Management.
- Succession and Talent Management.
- Employee Communication.
- Employee Relations.
- Works with the HR team to define and support a culture that is aligned with the Newterra brand and strategic direction. Works with the HR team to define organization structure(s), job design, and leadership processes that promote an effective, productive, and profitable operation.
- Other duties as assigned.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Knowledge of Record of Employment forms (ROE's).
- Knowledge of Workers Compensation (by province) and Employer Health Tax (EHT).
- Stay abreast of compliance requirements and industry best practices; recommend changes or modifications to existing policies and programs to remain in compliance; and adopt best practices where feasible.
- Work with HR Team as a back up to recruiting and onboarding.
- Develop and update Job Descriptions as a back up to the HR team.
- Complete Stay and Exit Interviews as a back up to the HR team.
- Track and maintain goals, metrics (ex: turnover), and performance of the hiring cycle; maintain regularly communicated status and results to Director.
- Maintain records, spreadsheets, and current HR files and databases.
- Provides support and assistance for other projects and programs in Human Resources.
- Collaborates with HR and other operational teams to create effective communication channels, vehicles, and processes as well as specific communication events and items.
- Works with HR Director to manage relationships and contracts with outside vendors, such as recruitment agencies, benefits brokers, employment lawyers, and other professional services as needed.
- Supports and inputs to the budget for human resources activities.
- Supports the Employee Engagement Committee as a committee member or through activities.
- Responsible for completing all legislated surveys, audits, and compliance reports.
- Responsible for performing duties in a safe manner and promoting safety to others in accordance with Newterra's safety policies and procedures. This includes reporting all safety concerns, near-misses, and incidents to their manager.
- Adhere to the company processes as detailed in Newterra's online systems and programs and bring forward ideas for continuous improvement.
- Responsible for completing all assigned training applicable to your position in the applicable timeframe.
- Coordinate employee benefits and administration as necessary.
- Complete all responsibilities while ensuring adherence to Newterra's Delegation of Authority.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree or diploma in a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 5 years human resource general experience.
- Minimum undergraduate degree in business or human resource management; HR accreditation preferred or combination of skills and experience equivalent to education noted.
- Experience working in a company going through significant growth.
- Experience working for an engineering, construction, or manufacturing company a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to understand business issues and plans and align HR strategies and practices.
- Strong technical knowledge of human resource management practices.
- Demonstrated ability to create and execute human resources strategies and plans.
- Excellent relationship management and influencing skills.
- Excellent coaching skills.
- Strong time and project management skills.
- Excellent knowledge of employment legislation and practices in the USA and Canada.
- Experience in HRIS systems (i.e. Ceridian an asset).
- Aware of technological advances in the area of Human Resources and able to create and implement e-based solutions along with strong information technology support.
- Competent in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Regularly required to sit for prolonged periods; frequently required to stand, walk, and use business equipment daily such as a computer, copier, telephone, etc.; occasionally required to reach overhead, bend, and lift objects of up to 15 lbs. Complex communication, thinking, and analysis required.
Generally, works in an office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. However, may be required to visit production sites and be exposed to outdoor or manufacturing elements.
