Your Role

Reporting to the Director of Health and Wellness, the Justice Coordinator and Court Worker is responsible for the following: coordinating local crime prevention and justice initiatives, developing (and offering) a variety of community justice programs, assisting with negotiating and administering contribution agreements with the federal and territorial governments. This position will assist Indigenous persons of C/TFN involved in the criminal justice system in obtaining fair, just, equitable, and culturally sensitive treatment.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Liaising between the RCMP and the Justice Committee once an offence has been committed

- Discussing the possibility of pre-charge intervention with the offender(s), victim(s) and the RCMP after consultation with the Family Council, Health & Wellness and Outreach Workers;

- Increase access to available resources and programs by providing information to C/TFN Citizens about legal, community justice and social programs.

- Improve communication between Indigenous Persons and criminal justice officials by assisting court officials in understanding culture, values and virtues, and customs of C/TFN Citizens as well as the social and economic situation of each client.

- Ensure clients understand the nature of the charges brought against them

- Provide information about: the justice system and how it works, including the right to speak on ones’ own behalf or to request legal counsel and alternative method to justice, such as sentencing circles and restorative justice, where available and appropriate.

- Assist clients with scheduling legal aid and lawyer appointments, bail application and understanding and interpreting court documents, forms, directions and conditions.

- Provide referrals to appropriate legal, community justice and social programs.

- Assist court official in understanding culture, values and virtues and customs of C/TFN Citizens. Facilitate communication between C/TFN clients and the justice system, Advocate for community members in the need of legal aid. Act as a liaison between community members and crown and defense lawyers and other court officials.

- Maintain client files, provide a client service statistic report quarterly. Develop and maintain a work plan and budget for the program

- Developing and implementing an appropriate victim support program

- Developing and implementing an appropriate offender support program

- Ensuring that an appropriate pre-charge intervention/diversion program is implemented and supervised

- Developing appropriate post-charge diversion programs

- Assisting the Family Council to decide whether or not to accept an application for circle sentencing and/or other post-charge options if charges are laid

- Organizing and attending meetings involving the crown, the RCMP, victim(s) and offender(s) where appropriate to ensure that an action plan is in place prior to court

- Attending Territorial court including circle sentencing; and Yukon Review Board hearings

- Supervising the recommendations of the court with respect to the offender.

- Develop work plans & budgets with SGO & H&W director

- Attends various justice meetings specific to the “Administration of Justice” as well as other community justice initiatives

- Assists with the production of Bail Supervision Reports (BSR) and Pre-Sentence Reports (PSR) including Gladue Reports

- In consultation with the Director, maintain, complete and submit all documentation, statistics and reports as per funder and other reporting obligations

- Other related duties as assigned

Essential Qualifications

- Successful completion of post-secondary coursework in criminology, sociology, law, or related field.

- Mediation/peacemaking/conflict resolution training

- Experience working in a cross-cultural environment or equivalent combination of education and experience

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Suitability

- Knowledge of CTFN History, culture, demographics, goals and aspirations

- Knowledge of and implementing the “CTFN Family Act” books one and two

- Knowledge of and implementing the “Theory of change”

- Knowledge of the Canadian justice system including the impact of “Gladue”

- Strong office administration skills

- Ability to work effectively and efficiently, both independently and as part of a team

- Able to handle stress while meeting deadlines and handling heavy workloads

- Very strong time management, organization, and prioritization skills

- Good oral, listening, writing and electronic communication skills.

- Good research skills in legal and non-legal contexts

- Ability to enforce policy with tact and diplomacy

- Ability to maintain confidentiality

- Ability to communicate effectively and respond to inquiries professionally

- Ability to meet critical deadlines

- Ability to problem solve
