Oncology Nurse

Oncology nurses are registered nurses who specialize in providing care for cancer patients and their families. They give care across the disease trajectory, and their responsibilities will vary with their role, whether focused on prevention, screening, diagnostics, staging, treatment, follow-up, survivorship care or palliation. - Provide specialized care for cancer patients and their families - Help patients identify, assess, and manage symptoms - Examine a patient’s risk for cancer because of genetics, lifestyle, and/or environmental exposures, and counsel them appropriately - Safely deliver therapeutic treatments, manage side effects and complications, and complete relevant assessments Make a Difference - Counsel and educate patients and families about their diagnoses, treatment plans, and self-management strategies - Advocate on behalf of patients - Support individuals and families in developing effective coping strategies and enhancing their capacity to deal with the struggles of having cancer - Help patients and families achieve the optimum quality of life across all aspects of their experience, including the psychosocial, spiritual, and physical domains - Work closely with patients and their families on a daily basis using a patient-focused care model that involves patients, families, and caregivers in care - Actively collaborate with other nursing team members, physicians, health care aides, social workers, therapists, technologists, and administrative staff - Work in a variety of settings including hospitals, ambulatory cancer centres, and community cancer clinics To acquire this certification, the nurse must have a minimum of two years’ experience in an oncology work setting, and then successfully pass the CNA’s Oncology Nursing Certification Exam.
