The Ministry of Children and Family Services funds programs and services to support vulnerable children, youth, families and individuals to live safely and succeed in Alberta. This includes providing services and resources to protect children and youth from abuse and neglect, effectively addressing harm that has placed them in need of intervention, and mentoring and support services for youth transitioning into healthy, productive adults.
Children and Family Services – North Region is offering an impactful opportunity for a Manager, Child Intervention (CI). The role will allow a leader with experience in Child Intervention services to advance their leadership by managing high‑quality intervention services and programs for children, youth and families across the region.
The Manager will lead and oversee the delivery of services, ensuring alignment with regional and ministry goals, compliance with legislation and standards, and effective program implementation. This includes shifting from a child protection mindset toward fostering healthy families and communities through collaboration and partnership.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, guidance and support to a team of front‑line staff.
- Ensure services are aligned with regional strategies and business goals.
- Reflect and uphold the vision of the region, department and ministry while complying with legislation, regulations, provincial standards, regional policies and fiscal targets.
- Champion the implementation of programs and new initiatives that support the strategic direction of the ministry and region.
- Drive the shift from child protection to healthy families by fostering positive communities and promoting collaborative partnerships to achieve better outcomes for children, youth and families.
- Apply a systems‑thinking approach by considering trends across program environments and broader impacts to ensure culturally appropriate and safe services.
- Utilize experience working with diverse communities to confidently employ a variety of diversity and inclusion strategies to initiate, support and evaluate working relationships.
- Demonstrate anti‑oppressive practices when working with urban and rural Indigenous communities, integrating Indigenous ways of knowing with standard Western approaches.
Perks of living in the North
- Northern Allowance – additional allowance of $241.38 for each bi‑weekly pay period served.
- Attraction Bonus – Fort McMurray and positions above the 57th Parallel – 25% of base salary paid out in the first year of employment (2‑year return service agreement).
- Retention Allowance – annual retention bonus of $6,000 (divided into $3,000 paid in March and $3,000 paid in September).

Qualifications
Preferred education is a Bachelor of Social Work with four (4) years of related experience including supervisory roles in a child protection environment.
The following equivalencies may be considered:
- Master of Social Work and three (3) years of experience; or
- Related university degree with four (4) years of related experience; or
- Related diploma plus six (6) years of related experience.
Preference will be given to those who have experience in:
- Child protection duties under provincial or equivalent child welfare legislation.
- Safety Phase and Intake Workflow.
- Leading and managing a diverse team that does complex work.
- Managing systems and processes including performance management, budgeting and forecasting, and human resources.
- Extensive experience working with Indigenous and diverse communities.
- Developing, evaluating and implementing policy initiatives, programs and services.
- Building effective partnerships with internal and external customers, clients, staff and stakeholders.
- Strong planning, analytical, issue management and consultative skills.
Assets:
- Project management.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Share Point.
- Working knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act, Child Intervention Practice Framework, Signs of Safety.
This position works Monday to Friday, 36.25 hours a week. The role may require additional hours, including weekends, on‑call duties and travel as necessary.
Preference will be given to candidates who reside in the North Region; relocation support will be considered. The successful candidate will frequently travel to the designated office location as part of their responsibilities.
Role Requirements
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Ability to travel within the region.
- Registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) and maintain registration as required by the Health Professions Act.
- Hold current delegations.
- Completed or in progress with the Foundations, Relationship and Culture pathways in the Ministry’s ICUF; training completion may be confirmed during application.
