The Ministry of Children and Family Services funds programs and services to support vulnerable children, youth, families, and individuals to live safely and succeed in Alberta. This includes providing services and resources to protect children and youth from abuse and neglect, and effectively address harm that has placed them in need of intervention. Mentoring and support services are available to youth transitioning into healthy, productive adults. The ministry also invests in community-based groups that support prevention and early intervention services such as Family Resource Networks, youth emergency shelters as well as programs that raise awareness and help respond to family violence, sexual violence, and abuse.

Role Responsibilities

The Opportunity: North Region is looking to recruit a leader with experience in Child Intervention services who is preparing to take their leadership to the next level by serving in a manager capacity. This position affords the opportunity for the successful candidate to apply and practice their leadership skills while applying their knowledge and experience to continuously improve practice within the front line. While candidates living in the North are preferred candidates, consideration may be given to those who are able to travel to their designated worksites. Support with relocation expenses may also be considered.

Are you ready? As a Child Intervention Manager, you will lead and oversee the delivery of high-quality intervention services and programs for children, youth, and families. Your leadership will ensure alignment with regional and ministry goals, compliance with legislation and standards, and effective program implementation.

In this role, you will guide a shift from a child protection mindset toward fostering healthy families and communities through collaboration and partnerships. You will apply a systems-thinking approach to deliver culturally appropriate and safe services, with a strong focus on Indigenous communities by integrating Indigenous ways of knowing with Western practices. Additionally, you will employ diverse strategies to build, maintain, and evaluate meaningful working relationships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and support to a team of front-line staff.
  • Ensure services are aligned with regional strategies and business goals.
  • Reflect and uphold the vision of the region, department, and ministry while complying with legislation, regulations, provincial standards, regional policies, and fiscal targets.
  • Champion the implementation of programs and new initiatives that support the strategic direction of the ministry and region.
  • Drive the shift from child protection to healthy families by fostering positive communities and promoting collaborative partnerships to achieve better outcomes for children, youth, and families.
  • Apply a systems-thinking approach by considering trends across program environments and broader impacts to ensure culturally appropriate and safe services.
  • Utilize experience working with diverse communities to confidently employ a variety of diversity and inclusion strategies to initiate, support, and evaluate working relationships.
  • Demonstrate anti-oppressive practices when working with urban and rural Indigenous communities, integrating Indigenous ways of knowing with standard Western approaches.

Perks of living in the North are:

  • Northern Allowance – additional allowance of $241.38 for each bi-weekly pay period served.
  • Attraction Bonus – Fort McMurray and positions above the 57th Parallel - 25% of based salary paid out in the first year of employment (2-year return service agreement)
  • Retention Allowance - annual retention bonus of $6,000 ($3,000.00 paid out in March and $3,000.00 paid out in September).

Qualifications

Preferred education is a Bachelor of Social Work with four (4) years of related experience including supervisory in a child protection environment.

The following equivalencies maybe considered:

  • Master of Social Work and three (3) years of experience; OR
  • Related university degree with four (4) years of related experience; OR
  • Related diploma plus six (6) years of related experience.

Preference will be given to those who have experience in:

  • Child protection responsible for providing a full range of child protection duties delegated under a provincial or equivalent child welfare legislation.
  • Safety Phase and Intake Workflow.
  • Leading and managing a diverse team that does complex work.
  • Managing systems and processes including performance management, budgeting, and forecasting processes, human resources.
  • Extensive experience working with Indigenous and diverse communities.
  • Developing, evaluating, implementing policy initiatives, programs, and services.
  • Demonstrated capacity to build effective partnerships with internal and external customers, clients, staff, and stakeholders essential to this position.
  • Strong planning, analytical, issues management and consultative skills are required.

This position works Monday to Friday, 36.25-hours a week. (The role may require additional hours beyond the regular workday, including weekends, on-call duties, and travel as necessary.)

Preference would be for the successful candidate to reside in the North Region. Relocation support will be considered. The successful candidate will be required to frequently travel to the designated office location they will be supporting as part of their role responsibilities.

Role Requirements:

  • This role requires that you have a valid Class 5 Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • The ability to travel within the region is required.
  • As per the Health Professions Act successful applicants must: be registered and maintain their registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW).
  • Must hold current delegation.
  • Candidates must have completed or be in the process of completing the Foundations, and Relationship and Culture pathways in the Ministry's ICUF to be considered for the role. You may be asked to confirm training completion as part of your application.
