Overview
Job Title: Dining Hall & Volunteer Coordinator
Reports to: Food Service Manager
Work Location: RockRidge Canyon, Princeton, BC
Position Purpose: RockRidge Canyon is a Young Life of Canada property in Princeton, British Columbia, owned and operated by Young Life for the purpose of reaching teenagers with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It additionally functions as a conference and retreat center when not being used by Young Life.
Responsibilities
The Dining Hall Coordinator oversees the safe, effective and efficient operation of four dining rooms (Pinnacle, Lakeview, Rimrock and Leadership Lodge). This includes the training, scheduling and supervising of Dining Hall Hosts and volunteer work crew. The coordinator works closely with the Food Service Manager (FSM) to ensure a safe and timely delivery of each food service, coordinates with the Guest Services department to meet special requests, and assists with set-up and take-down tasks as needed to support a well-run meal service.
Young Life is a relational ministry. Incumbents must convey Christ-like hospitality and concern for guests and staff. Responding promptly and professionally to unexpected guest needs is important and required. All staff members are expected to represent Young Life positively and professionally within the community.
This is a seasonal full-time position from April – October and part-time from November - March.
The employee subscribes to Young Life’s Statement of Faith and abides by its Codes of Conduct.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Spiritual Leadership
- Model Christ in word and actions.
- Model and promote Young Life’s mission, core values, and strategic plan.
- Pray for kids, Young Life volunteers, and fellow Young Life staff. Ensure ministry at RockRidge Canyon is designed and carried out with dependence on prayer that flows from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Maintain personal knowledge and experience of the saving work of Jesus Christ, pursue personal spiritual growth, and be involved in a local church.
Dining Hall Oversight
- Be a team player with a teachable attitude; follow directions and provide clear instructions and oversight to Dining Room staff, interns & volunteers.
- Ensure superior training of Work Crew, volunteers, and paid staff in dining hall service.
- Maintain quality standards for organization, cleanliness and overall appearance of Dining Rooms, front pass in kitchen, furniture, and equipment.
- Maintain standardized setup and take-down, serving and bussing procedures for Dining Rooms.
- Restock paper products, linens and cleaning supplies as needed.
- Act as liaison between kitchen staff and Dining Room staff.
- May assist with dishwashing and minor food preparation.
- Uphold Young Life Food Service Standards and health and sanitation standards meeting or exceeding provincial codes.
- Follow and enforce safety protocols and procedures (FOODSAFE, WHMIS, MSDS).
- Arrive on time, properly attired and prepared to work; flexibility in scheduling to coincide with camps.
- Work with the Come & Serve Hosts and Adult Guest Hosts as a liaison to the FSM and cooks.
Volunteer Coordination
- Oversee the overall volunteer program through recruitment, housing, communication, landing, free time and thank you gifts for adult short-term volunteers, YL short term/summer Work Crew and the Come & Serve program.
Young Life Summer Camping
- Organize, track and support recruitment of Adult Volunteers and Come & Serve programs.
- Train and support Work Crew Bosses.
- Support FSM in meal count charts and dietaries.
Team Duties and Responsibilities
- Model open communication and collaborate with property staff and Young Life teams in support of mission, values and plan.
- Work well with people of all ages, especially youth and seniors.
- Foster healthy relationships with the property staff team.
- Attend devotionals and staff meetings.
- Promote a truthful, accountable, forgiving, joyful and healthy work culture.
Personal and Professional Development
- Pursue opportunities for growth through professional development training as directed or approved by the FSM.
Dress Code
In Pinnacle Dining Room and Lakeview: clean jeans (no tears/holes) or loose-fitting stretch pants; sweatpants not allowed. Closed-toed, non-slip footwear preferred. RRC serving shirt provided for regular service. In Wolfe Creek Lodge: black pants and black shoes with RRC shirt. For formal dinners: white shirt/blouse with black pants and black shoes. Hair pulled back, minimal jewelry, clean hands, no nail polish.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma required.
- Hospitality experience is an asset (restaurant service or commercial kitchen).
- Knowledge/experience in Young Life or other youth ministry is an asset.
- Not-for-profit or public organizations experience is beneficial.
- Management experience is beneficial.
Skills
- Strong ethical, Christ-like character; model responsible work habits, servant-leadership and stewardship.
- Strong communication skills; diplomatic and tactful.
- Integrity to handle sensitive or confidential material.
Abilities
- Results-oriented with ability to work with a diverse team; able to work under pressure.
- Intermediate proficiency in Google Workspace (Team Drive).
- Experience with tools such as Constant Contact/Mailchimp, Jot Forms, CampBrain is an asset.
Other Requirements
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Must be willing to relocate to Princeton, BC.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Able to work a flexible schedule according to seasonal operating requirements.
- Current clean criminal record check, including vulnerable sector search, required.
Work Conditions
Work is performed in a rural camp setting.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to look at a computer screen and use a keyboard up to 30% of the time; ability to see, hear and speak.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Hours and Hazards
- Hours are flexible based on rental groups and the YL summer program; typically 5 days per week.
- Hazards are considered minor and controllable.
