Overview

The Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (MHRH) is a level 3 Regional Trauma referral center averaging 39 000 emergency visits per year with a catchment area of 110 000. Medicine Hat is a community of 65 671+ located in the southeast corner of Alberta and is an excellent year‑round destination for all ages. Medicine Hat has the lowest combined tax rate in Canada, the lowest utility rates in Alberta, and an enviable climate. A mid‑sized city with a strong sense of community, Medicine Hat offers amenities such as recreational facilities, cultural attractions, and is known for its parks and outdoor activities, including the nearby Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park.

The Medicine Hat Regional Hospital Emergency Department is currently accepting applications for a full‑time emergency physician. The department offers 24‑hour service with 14 full and part‑time Emergency Physicians and a flexible self‑scheduling system.

Responsibilities and Duties

- Dual physician coverage during the day

- Respond to in‑hospital code blue

- Full‑service emergency care including trauma and resuscitation

- CCFP‑EM / RCPSC required to work the higher acuity area of the department; applicants with Emergency Medicine experience may be considered and this requirement may be waived for the lower acuity area.

Additional Responsibilities

- Establish and maintain a full‑time clinical practice in the Zone Clinical Department of Emergency Medicine at MHRH; a full‑time practice is defined as providing commensurate shifts in keeping with other equivalent practice FTEs as assigned by the medical leader on site.

- Obtain and maintain an AHS Medical Staff Appointment and appropriate privileges to provide the Services.

- Reside in and have as primary residence the community of Medicine Hat.

- Meet the expectations for Emergency Medicine practitioners as may be established or directed by an appropriate Medical Leader for MHRH.

- Abide by the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws, the AHS Medical Staff Rules and AHS policies.

- Work collaboratively within the Clinical Department of Emergency Medicine at MHRH.

- Participate fully in quality improvement programs and initiatives undertaken within the Zone Clinical Department of Emergency Medicine at MHRH and AHS in general, including achievement of certain performance indicators as determined by AHS; the physician shall acknowledge, actively support, and work toward the expected outcome measures in the domains of safety (e.g., adverse outcomes/incidents, effectiveness, and patient and family satisfaction).

- Attendance at meetings as is reasonably expected of any member of the AHS Medical Staff.

Eligibility and Training

Successful applicants shall be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). CCFP‑EM (Canadian College of Family Physicians – Emergency Medicine) or RCPSC (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada) is preferred but not required; successful applicants without designation will work the lower acuity emergency department area.

Certifications

Current ACLS, ATLS; PALS is recommended.

- Compensation: Compensation is based on a fee‑for‑service model and may include additional program stipends. The average gross income of an Emergency Medicine Physician in Alberta is $354,960.

- Benefits: Physician benefits available through the Alberta Medical Association (AMA). To receive these benefits, physicians must be members of the AMA or pay a non‑member administration fee.
