Treasury Board and Finance, Edmonton – Responsible for budget planning, financial management and economic analysis, as well as the administration of tax and revenue programs.

The Economics and Fiscal Policy Division plays an integral role in the development of Alberta's fiscal strategy. The division is responsible for the development, interpretation and analysis of economic, fiscal and statistical data to support policy development and decision-making within the Government of Alberta.

The Senior Analyst is responsible for providing expert advice on socio-economic and demographic issues to Treasury Board and Finance and other departments within GOA. The position is expected to maintain expert knowledge of demographic and social trends, modelling techniques, analytical methods and relevant data sources to maintain the department's lead in analyzing, estimating and projecting socio-demographic trends within the province. The Senior Demographer must have strong oral and written communication skills to communicate complex information and analyses to both technical and non-technical audiences.

As a Senior Analyst you will be:

- Responsible for developing the population projections that form the basis for the department's economic and fiscal forecast program, which includes preparing demographic reports, and evaluating and enhancing current demographic models.
- Accountable as an expert on population statistics and advises the public and private sector leaders on demographic trends and issues.
- Developing standard and custom demographic estimates and projections.
- Maintaining liaisons with appropriate federal and provincial government counterparts to keep apprised on new developments around demographic statistics and data development.

As a Senior Analyst, you must possess extensive knowledge and experience with population statistics, forecasting and population modelling methodologies. In addition, the Senior Analyst must have well-honed demographic analysis, project management, strategic thinking and planning skills.

Qualifications

A university degree in social sciences - demography, sociology, economics, statistics field plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

The following are considered assets.

- A Master's degree in the social sciences (i.e. demography, sociology, economics, statistics).
- In-depth knowledge of demographic theory, methodologies, and population forecasting models.
- Experience utilizing large data sets, econometric modelling and statistical programming software.
- Extensive knowledge of current social, economic, and demographic trends.
- Excellent knowledge of socio-economic and demographic data sources.
- Ability to apply demographic theory and use quantitative/qualitative methods.
- Strong communication, attention to detail, and time management skills.
- Organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to initiate and complete research projects independently.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Advanced knowledge of statistical techniques.

This is a permanent, full-time position working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Currently, the Government of Alberta offers a hybrid work schedule that employees can choose to work from home for two days per week. This position will be located in the Queen Elizabeth II Building in Edmonton.

Candidates may be asked to participate in a written assessment prior to the interview. The final candidate for this position will be asked to undergo pre-employment checks.
